- New equipment and creation of recycling bins improve cleanliness in the city of Rio
With a modern fleet, the Company will increase street cleaning, waste collection, among others - Fabio Motta/City Hall of Rio Investments by Mayor Eduardo Paes' administration in Comlurb have contributed to a significant improvement in the cleaning work of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Throughout 2022, the City of Rio invested in the purchase of new equipment and the creation of ecopoints, places for the voluntary delivery of household waste. Check out the company's main highlights throughout this year below.
New equipment
To reinforce urban cleaning in the city of Rio, Comlurb increased the number of vehicles and motorized equipment dedicated to urban cleaning by more than 300 this year, such as beach tractors with attached implements for sifting sand, reaching up to 20 centimeters deep; large sweepers, which assist street cleaners in sweeping services on main roads; motorized pump vans, used for hydraulic washing of public spaces, with reused water; scorpion-type side-arm brushcutter tractors, which cut grass along curbs; Giro-Zero, which cuts grassy areas with extreme agility; articulated tractors for collection in communities; and vans specifically designed for revitalizing squares.
In early December, 600 new mowers (handheld equipment) for cutting flowerbeds and gardens began to arrive; 120 are already in use. Safer to handle and capable of cutting stems of up to ten centimeters, a margin considered excellent, the equipment, which weighs eight kilos, is adjustable and ergonomic.
Ecopoints
By the end of the year, Comlurb will have opened 20 recycling points for the voluntary delivery of household waste, rubble, unusable and recyclable goods, located in areas with the highest incidence of irregular waste disposal. By the beginning of December, 17 had been opened: Santo Amaro, Vagão, Madureira, Mineira, Vigário Geral, Vila Jurema (Itajaí), Novo Lar, Praça do Amarelinho, Parada de Lucas, Camarista Méier, Mangueira, Parque Royal, Vila Joaniza, Paranapuã Dendê, Pixunas, Arará and Sá Viana. Merendiba, Juramento and Fogueteiro will be opened by the end of the year. Comlurb has encouraged residents of these areas to deliver their waste to recycling points and ensure that it is disposed of correctly.
Gas powered truck
At the end of November, Comlurb put its first compactor truck powered by Natural Gas (NGV) to the streets for testing. The new product is quieter and ideal for night work. In addition, the machine is almost odorless, compared to a diesel engine. According to the supplier, filling the cylinders with gas is equivalent to a saving of around R$300 compared to diesel consumption. If approved, the truck could be included in future contracts and bids for the company's fleet, which already has 16 100% electric compactors, with zero greenhouse gas emissions.
IPL
The results of the Cleaning Standard Index (IPL), which has measured the quality of urban cleaning and guided Comlurb's actions since 2014, show that the current municipal administration is reducing differences and making the quality of services more balanced in different regions of the city, from the most affluent to the most deprived areas. The areas with the highest IPL scores, which range from 0 to 100, were in the South and Central Zones. Those with the lowest scores were concentrated mainly in the North and West Zones. The average IPL in the city went from 64 points in January 2021 to 73 points in September 2022.
The areas that already had the highest scores continued to see further improvements, rising from 79 to 85, a 7% increase. But the biggest leap was in the areas that had the lowest scores, which rose from 46 to 60, a 30% increase, and increasingly approached the scores of the most upscale areas. The range, which is the difference between the best and worst scores, fell from 34 points to 26, a 22% reduction.
