- Luz Maravilha Program installs 450 thousand LED lighting points in the city
President Vargas Avenue - Fabio Motta/City Hall of Rio Public lighting has been renovated in the city thanks to the Luz Maravilha program, a public-private partnership (PPP) between the City of Rio and the company Smart Luz that benefits streets with heavy traffic, tunnels and alleys in communities. The initial goal of replacing the 450 thousand light points in the capital with LEDs was achieved at the end of October, ahead of the deadline set in December. Replacing these lamps will lead to savings of around R$100 million in the city's public accounts in 2022. In addition, at least 7.558 steel poles were replaced by fiber models, which are safer and more resistant.
The modernization will benefit neighborhoods throughout the capital, including contributing to the safety of these locations. Among the main roads covered are Presidente Vargas and Rio Branco avenues, in the city center; Dom Hélder Câmara Avenue, in the North Zone; Lagoa-Barra Highway, which connects the South Zone to Barra; Américas and Ayrton Senna avenues, in Barra da Tijuca; Santa Cruz Avenue, in Realengo; Campinho Road, in Campo Grande; Pau Ferro Road, in Jacarepaguá; Doutor Satamini and Hadock Lobo streets, in Greater Tijuca; and Visconde de Pirajá Street, in Ipanema.
All of the city's major tunnels were also remodeled. There are 12 in total, in the city center and in the north, south and west zones of Rio: Martin Sá, Billy Blanco, Major Vaz, João Ricardo, Rebouças, Santa Bárbara, Noel Rosa, Alaor Prata (Old Tunnel), Zuzu Angel and Rafael Mascarenhas. More than 6.700 light points were replaced on these roads alone.

On the Rio de Janeiro coast, the scenery is truly stunning, with LED lighting all the way from Leme to Pontal. A highlight of this service is the work done on the Quebra-mar pier in Barra da Tijuca. Ilha da Gigoia, another important area of Rio and a tourist attraction, is also 100% LED-lit.

Rio's communities benefited from new lighting, including large favelas such as Rocinha, in the South Zone, and the Alemão and Penha complexes, in the North Zone.
The program reached all regions of the city simultaneously. The PPP will last 20 years and will support the maintenance and operation of all equipment. Despite municipal efforts, thefts are already affecting this new service. The PPP suffered losses of more than R$3 million due to thefts from the electrical grid between January and August 2022. Measures are being implemented to prevent these actions. On the Linha Vermelha alone, eight thousand meters of copper cables were replaced with aluminum, which has a low market value. Other anti-theft measures include shielding the wire junction boxes, installing mesh boxes to protect the light fixtures, and installing anti-theft boxes on the wiring.
