The new BRT model has had its visual identity redefined in yellow and silver and is more modern - Beth Santos/City Hall of Rio The Rio City Hall, through the Municipal Department of Transportation (SMTR), purchased approximately 600 new buses to upgrade the BRT system. Three bidding processes were carried out to purchase the vehicles. In the first, held on April 1st of this year, 191 buses were purchased, 120 of which were articulated and 71 were standard models.
The second took place on May 27, when another 100 articulated buses were purchased. The vehicles purchased in the first two bids are expected to be delivered gradually. Initially, 80 buses were delivered, which are in circulation on the Transolímpica and on the route between the Alvorada, Centro Olímpico and Jardim Oceânico terminals. On March 1, Rio's anniversary, the City Hall delivered another 110 new buses to the system. The purchased vehicles began to circulate on the Transcarioca, which had its entire fleet renewed.
The third bidding process took place on November 17, and another 270 buses were purchased. These vehicles, with a minimum capacity for 180 passengers, are expected to be delivered between November 2023 and March 2024.
