- Campaigns to protect children and adolescents during Carnival are launched in the city
Launch of child protection campaigns - Fábio Costa / Rio City Hall The Municipal Department of Social Assistance (SMAS) and the Municipal Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (CMDCA – Rio) launched this Monday (18/04), at Praça da Apoteose, a campaign to prevent and combat the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, as well as a donation campaign to the Municipal Fund for the Care of the Rights of Children and Adolescents.
The high point of the campaigns will be the parade of the children's blocks, on Sunday (24/04), at the Sambadrome. Ten-meter banners will be extended in Sapucaí, and teenagers from the URS (Social Reintegration Unit) Paulo Freire will parade wearing campaign shirts.
– We appeal to society: protecting our children and adolescents is everyone’s responsibility. Society should report the incident and call 100. Our network also includes CREAS, CRAS, CMDCA and guardianship councils, there are several bodies that can report this situation – said Maria Pucú, municipal secretary of Social Welfare.
The teenagers from Paulo Freire, who attended the campaign launch at the Sambadrome, are part of the Inclui Rio team, a SMAS project that trains filmmakers and other specialists in cinematographic arts who live or have lived in shelters run by the City Hall, in partnership with ABC Cursos de Cinema and RioFilme. The coordinator of this project is filmmaker Pedro Dannemann, who, at the Sambadrome, will film scenes for short Carnival films with the teenagers, to be made available on the project's digital platform (https://linktr.ee/mostraincluirio) on May 18, National Day to Combat Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children and Adolescents.
The Carnival campaign is a preview of the celebration of this fight, since during the festivities the number of reports of sexual crimes against children and adolescents through Dial 20 increases by around 100%.
Three hundred and twenty SMAS/CMDCA employees will participate in the awareness-raising work during the four days of Carnival, at the Sambadrome and Intendente Magalhães. Educational material will be distributed: folders and fans.
The campaign to encourage donations to the FMDCA is being carried out in partnership with the Regional Accounting Council (CRC-Rio). The idea is to take advantage of Carnival to attract more residents of Rio to donate with a discount on their Income Tax, in accordance with the law.
