Young filmmakers parade in Sapucaí against the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents

Campaign to combat the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents - Thiago Lara / Rio City Hall The Municipal Department of Social Welfare (SMAS) and the Municipal Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents (CMDCA-Rio) held an unprecedented parade at the Sambadrome this Sunday (24/04): children from the Paulo Freire Social Reintegration Unit, aged 13 to 17, made their debut on the carnival catwalk wearing shirts for the campaign to combat the sexual abuse and exploitation of children and adolescents, holding ten-meter banners. During the first four days of carnival, teams from the department and the council distributed 4.766 leaflets and fans to raise awareness about this fight.
During the festivities, the number of reports of sexual crimes against children and adolescents through Dial 20 increases by around 100%. According to studies carried out by CMDCA-Rio, based on data from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Brazilian Public Security Forum, in the State of Rio the victimization rate (rate of attempted and completed acts) for rape or rape of vulnerable children and adolescents aged zero to 19 was 58,6% in 2017 and 83,4% in 2020.
The boys from URS Paulo Freire opened the parade of children's schools in front of the Still Exist Children of Vila Kennedy. They also walked along Sapucaí in front of the Apprentices of Acadêmicos do Salgueiro.
The teenagers are part of the Inclui Rio project, coordinated by filmmaker Pedro Dannemann, which promotes workshops on film careers for the production of short films. Scenes from this carnival are being filmed for the celebration of May 18, the National Day to Combat Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children and Adolescents. The municipal secretary of Social Assistance, Maria Pucú, informed that the campaign will continue on the streets:
– We were around the Sambadrome and Terreirão do Samba every day of Carnival, distributing identification bracelets and informational material. The campaign will continue on the streets until May 18.
The following people took part in the parade in Sapucaí: Emmanoel Gonçalves, 16 years old; Emmanuel Fernandes Rodrigues, 17 years old; João Pedro de Souza Nicácio, 17 years old; Matheus Gabriel Grativol, 16 years old; Vitor Gabriel da Silva de Souza, 15 years old; Adriano Soares, 16 years old; Douglas Miranda, 17 years old; Cauã Mello de Oliveira, 15 years old; and Gabriel Peixoto, 13 years old.
“I embrace every opportunity that comes my way,” said Douglas Miranda, 17, an excellent dancer who stood out for his samba dancing at the opening of the children’s schools parade at the Sambadrome. Born in Morro da Formiga, in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, he has been at the Paulo Freire shelter for a month and is eager to start studying film. “I don’t want to be just another black man, like everyone says. I’ve always fought against this violence.”
A campaign to encourage donations to the Municipal Fund for the Rights of Children and Adolescents is also being promoted, in partnership with the Regional Accounting Council (CRC). Accountants are trying to encourage their clients to donate to projects to protect children and adolescents, with a discount on their Income Tax, as provided for by law.
Three hundred and twenty SMAS/CMDCA employees participated in the in-person awareness-raising work of the two campaigns during these four days of Carnival, at the Sambadrome, Terreirão and Intendente Magalhães.
