City Hall inaugurates the 13th community kitchen of the Prato Feito Carioca program

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Municipal Department of Social Welfare (SMAS), inaugurated the 3th Community Kitchen of the Prato Feito Carioca program this Wednesday (8/13). The new unit will operate in Acari, in the North Zone. The program is a public policy of the City Hall to combat hunger, created to reduce the social effects of the economic crisis and the pandemic. To date, 74 thousand meals have been served.

 

– This help means a lot to me and my family because I don’t have money, not even to buy gas to feed my children. Today, I’m cooking with wood, like many people in the community. Now we’ll have food at home – said Rita de Cássia Nogueira, 44, a single mother and grandmother, resident of the Acari community and unemployed.

 

In addition to the Acari unit, kitchens in Mangueira, Andaraí, Realengo, Anchieta, Tanque, Campo Grande, Vila Kennedy, Guaratiba, Costa Barros, Bento Ribeiro, Bangu and Nova Sepetiba have been operating since June. Each Carioca Community Kitchen provides 5.600 meals per month.

 

– It is an honor to open the 13th community kitchen in Rio. Unfortunately, Brazil is back on the hunger map. The kitchen is present in the community and the idea is to deliver 5.600 free meals per month. We will have a team made up of a coordinator, nutritionist, technicians and social worker who will oversee the day-to-day work – highlighted the Secretary of Social Welfare, Maria Domingas Pucú.

 

The 47 Social Assistance Reference Centers (CRAS) are responsible for selecting the public to receive free meals from the Carioca Community Kitchens. The criteria is that people must be registered in CadÚnico (a registry of federal social programs) and have a monthly per capita income of up to R$105.

Planned by the National Food and Nutrition Security System (Sisan), created in 2006, community kitchens had never been implemented systematically in Brazilian cities.

 

– This program will help a lot because there are days when we eat and days when we have nothing to eat. This will help a lot because I am alone and I live off donations – said Juliana de Nascimento, 32 years old, unemployed.

 

Each kitchen receives operational and technical support to provide nutritious and balanced meals, respecting the food handling standards of the Municipal Health Surveillance Institute. SMAS is responsible for providing equipment and food.

The Carioca Community Kitchen, which opened this Wednesday, is in partnership with civil society through the Acari Residents Association. Each unit of the program is being implemented in areas where social organizations operate, enabling its faster installation in the most vulnerable areas of the city. And all are qualified and integrated into the Unified Social Assistance System (SUAS).

Prato Feito Carioca Card has already reached the hands of 5 thousand workers

The Prato Feito Carioca program is also providing magnetic cards, guaranteeing 22 meals per month for informal workers registered with CadÚnico, with a monthly per capita income between R$105,01 and R$210. The cost of each meal is subsidized by the City of Rio, allowing those who work far from home to also have access to free meals. In this first phase of the program, 5 cards have already been distributed to workers throughout the city.
