Full stands mark the first day of parades on Estrada Intendente Magalhães

The roots of Carnival, the people's Carnival. After two years without festivities due to the pandemic, Estrada Intendente Magalhães, in the North Zone of Rio, welcomed revelers again this Wednesday (20/04). The first of six days of parades for the access groups was marked by packed stands. The presentations until this Friday (22/04) include groups from the Federation of Blocks, the Evaluation Group and the Bronze Series. Next week, it will be the turn of the Silver Series schools, on Friday (29/04) and Saturday (30/04). On Sunday (01/05), Groups B and C. All free.

The reunion with the party was very emotional. Office assistant Nilceia Alves da Silva, 57, paraded in the Bahian section of the Raízes da Tijuca block. With 15 carnivals under her belt and physical fitness, she has the stamina of a beginner. This year, Dona Nilceia will also be at Salgueiro and Portela, as well as Renascer de Jacarepaguá, Raça Rubro-Negra, Império Rubro-Negro and Estácio de Sá.

 

– Carnival is necessary, it is joy. The people of Rio need Carnival. We work all year long. We have to enjoy the good moments in life – said Nilceia.

 

 

The parades of the street blocks on Intendente Magalhães included fireworks, new lighting and the entire structure of the Rio City Hall, such as street cleaners from Comlurb and teams from the Health Department and the Municipal Guard. The menu at the stalls was varied, with barbecue, snacks, French fries, breaded chicken, churros, hot dogs, sun-dried meat with cassava and boiled corn. Some people took advantage of the opportunity to increase their family income.

This is the case of self-employed Rosane de Albuquerque Chagas, 53 years old. She prepares 25 flavors of crepes, and the goal is to sell 100 per day during Carnival. Rosane relies on the help of her husband and two children:

 

– Thank God, the economy is back on track. Things are going great. It’s a good opportunity to make money and pay off any outstanding bills.

 

Information Technology professional Wallace Malta, 28, also took the opportunity to earn some extra money at Intendente Magalhães. He worked as a float driver for the Amigos de Tinguá group in Nova Iguaçu, Baixada Fluminense, founded just three months ago. According to Wallace, this is his first time working during Carnival.

 

– The festivities can’t stop. We, the workers, and the city all win – said the young man before appearing on the avenue with his friends and neighbors.

 

Euphoria in the stands

The mood in the stands was euphoric. Retired Gina Guimarães, 65, watched the Intendente Magalhães parades with her sister, pensioner Rosângela Guimarães, 62. They were both very excited.

 

– I come here every year. It’s a chance to see Carnival without paying anything, says Gina.

 

Rosângela agrees:

 

– We were missing all of this. We went through a difficult time with the pandemic, but now things are starting to get back to normal. Now it’s time to celebrate.

 

Among the crowd, it was possible to find people dressed up. College student Matheus Moraes Silva, 21, wore the costume of his favorite character: Spider-Man.

 

– Carnival is so good – said Matheus, who was a separate attraction for the children and posed for photos with the little ones who wanted to take home a souvenir of the superhero.
