City Hall reopens CineCarioca Nova Brasília, the first cinema installed in a community in Rio

The children were eager to return to CineCarioca - Marcelo Piu/City of Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes, Secretary of Government and Public Integrity Marcelo Calero, and RioFilme CEO Eduardo Figueira reopened CineCarioca Nova Brasília to the public this Sunday (17/10), in Complexo do Alemão. The space was the first cinema installed in a community in Rio. Paes took advantage of the event to announce that, this Monday (18/10), a decree will be published in the Municipal Official Gazette that will allow maximum capacity in places such as theaters, cinemas, shopping centers and events, maintaining the mandatory use of masks.
– Today we are reopening this fantastic cinema here in Complexo do Alemão, which had been abandoned for a long time. We restored it, got it up and running, and the population can now have access to a cultural facility of this quality. The audiovisual sector is very important not only for culture, but for the entire economy of the city – said the mayor, who then spoke about the new decree.
– Tomorrow a decree will be published in which the Health Department determines the end of the restriction that existed for theaters and cinemas, among other spaces, which will now be able to have full occupancy.
The reopening of CineCarioca Nova Brasília, which has been closed since December 2019, meets a demand from the population in its surroundings. The theater is the only cinema option in the Complexo do Alemão area, which, according to the 2010 IBGE Census, covers around 15 communities, with more than 60 thousand inhabitants. The cinema will have four daily sessions with tickets starting at R$5.
– Cinecarioca is one of the most important projects we have at RioFilme, for audience development and for making audiovisual content part of people’s daily lives. It’s amazing how cinema can boost a place’s economy. We know that, from the people selling popcorn to the bars that get busier, everything is driven by a cultural facility of this nature – said Secretary Marcelo Calero.
The film shown at the reopening of CineCarioca Nova Brasília was the animated film “Ainbo – The Amazon Warrior,” a Peruvian, Dutch and American production directed by filmmakers José Zelada and Richard Claus. The children’s animated film will share the space’s schedule throughout the week with the Marvel hit “Venom – Time of Carnage,” in five daily sessions – 14:00 p.m. and 16:00 p.m. (Ainbo) and 18:00 p.m., 20:10 p.m. and 22:15 p.m. (Venom).
The screening room has 91 seats and complies with motor accessibility rules and modern sound and image equipment. The space also has sensory accessibility technology (for audio description and descriptive captions) and a candy store, which will also be managed by the new manager of the space.
What happens with the new decree?
With the publication of the new decree this Monday (18/10), commercial and service provision activities located inside shopping malls, shopping centers and shopping galleries, as well as museums, libraries, cinemas, theaters, party houses, game rooms, circuses, children's recreation, amusement parks, theme parks and water parks, skating rinks, entertainment, tourist visits, aquariums, zoos, activities in show and concert venues and artistic performances in event spaces, drive-ins, fairs and congresses, exhibitions and authorized events may operate with a maximum capacity of 100%; the mandatory use of masks is maintained. They must also observe compliance with permanent measures to protect life.
Residents celebrate the reopening of CineCarioca
The return of CineCarioca was approved by the residents of Complexo do Alemão, from the youngest to the elderly. They were eager for the reopening of the cultural space.
– This reopening will be important for all residents, especially children, who love watching movies, and will be able to learn a lot more. I feel very happy because the elderly will also be able to enjoy this space – said Francisco da Cruz dos Santos, 59 years old.
Maria Isabella de Souza, 13, was happy to be back in a movie theater. She says she has always been a regular at CineCarioca.
– One of the movies I enjoyed watching here was The Lion King. The cinema is very good, comfortable and close to home. The popcorn is also very good.
The contract with the new management provides for social prices for tickets with a maximum value of R$10, half-price tickets at R$5 for students, senior citizens, people with special needs, residents of Complexo do Alemão and surrounding areas, upon presentation of proof of residence. RioFilme ensures subsidies so that social prices are viable.
– Today is a day of great happiness, of the resumption of audiovisual production in Rio. When we met to define strategies, Mayor Eduardo Paes and Secretary Marcelo Calero always emphasized the importance of reopening CineCarioca Nova Brasília. The joy of the community in knowing that the cinema would be reopened moves us all and shows the importance of RioFilme always promoting audiovisual production in the city – said RioFilme CEO Eduardo Figueira.
From its opening in 2010 until the end of 2019, CineCarioca Nova Brasília has always had impressive attendance figures, with around 700 visitors in 11.990 sessions. During its first four years of operation, several activities were held, such as school sessions for more than 10 students from the municipal school system.
