The new section will facilitate vehicle access to Avenida Francisco Bicalho - Fabio Motta/City Hall of Rio

Rio de Janeiro City Hall reopened the side lane of Avenida Brasil, towards the city center, on the stretch between Rua Santos Lima and Avenida Francisco Bicalho, in the Port Zone, this Saturday (2/12). The stretch was closed for construction work on the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal. This is another step in preparing the region for the start of operations of the Transbrasil BRT corridor, scheduled to begin operating in January 2024. The Gentileza Terminal is expected to be completed in December.

– The big message for the people of Rio is that the end of the construction work on Avenida Brasil and the start of operations at the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal are approaching. We will finish the construction work on the Gentileza Terminal by the end of December, and we expect the Transbrasil BRT corridor to start operating in January. On Monday, we will have city departments, such as CET-Rio and the Public Order Department, on hand to ensure that the operation is running smoothly. We hope that traffic will improve significantly, especially along this stretch of Caju. – says Eduardo Cavaliere, the municipal chief of staff.

With the reopening of the road, vehicles coming from Avenida Brasil, near Caju, can now head towards the city center, Tijuca and the Rebouças Tunnel without needing to use the Gasômetro Viaduct. With the reopening, the direct connection that previously existed between Avenida Brasil and Avenida Francisco Bicalho is reestablished.

The side lane of Avenida Brasil, towards the city center, a road used by approximately 13 vehicles per day before the construction work, will now be an alternative road, relieving the Gasômetro, which is currently saturated, receiving an average volume of 7.200 vehicles per hour, exceeding 115 per day in each direction. With the partial transfer of vehicle flow from Gasômetro to the side lane of Avenida Brasil, an improvement in fluidity is expected and, consequently, a reduction in travel times for access to the city center and the North and South Zones.

The route that has been released, in continuation of the side lane of Avenida Brasil from Caju, uses the streets Sá Freire, Conde de Leopoldina and Avenida Brasil until reaching Avenida Francisco Bicalho, with the capacity to accommodate three thousand vehicles per hour, reaching around 36 thousand to 42 thousand vehicles per day.

The Rio City Hall carried out infrastructure works on this route. The roads had their asphalt restored, with milling and resurfacing services. The vertical signage on the stretch was also restored, with new paint and the installation of several regulatory and warning signs.

To guide drivers, CET-Rio traffic agents are positioned along the route to monitor traffic and make any necessary adjustments. To access the Marcello Alencar Tunnel and the Bus Station, it is still recommended to use the central lane of Avenida Brasil.
