- Section of Avenida Brasil leading to Avenida Francisco Bicalho will reopen to traffic this Saturday
Rio de Janeiro City Hall will reopen the side lane of Avenida Brasil, towards the city center, at 2 am, on Saturday (12/8), in the section between Rua Santos Lima and Avenida Francisco Bicalho, in the Port Zone. The section was closed for construction work on the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal (TIG). This is another step in preparing the region for the start of the Transbrasil BRT corridor, scheduled to begin operating in January 2024. The TIG is expected to be delivered in December.
– The Gentileza Intermodal Terminal (TIG) is the most important mobility project of this administration. It will connect several modes of transport: BRT, municipal and intercity buses and VLT, in addition to an express bus to Galeão International Airport. The works will be completed by the end of December, and we expect the Transbrasil BRT corridor to begin operations in January, which will have a major impact on the lives of thousands of Rio residents – stated the municipal secretary of the Civil House, Eduardo Cavaliere.
With the reopening of the road, vehicles coming from Avenida Brasil, near Caju, will be able to continue towards the Center, Tijuca and the Rebouças Tunnel without needing to travel through the Gasômetro Viaduct. With the reopening, the direct connection, previously existing, between Avenida Brasil and Avenida Francisco Bicalho will be reestablished.
The side lane of Avenida Brasil, towards the city center, a road used by approximately 13 vehicles per day before the construction work, will become an alternative road, relieving the Gasômetro, which is currently saturated, receiving an average volume of 7.200 vehicles per hour, exceeding the 115 per day in each direction. With the partial transfer of vehicle flow from Gasômetro to the side lane of Avenida Brasil, it is expected to improve fluidity and, consequently, reduce travel times in access to the city center and the North and South Zones. It is, therefore, an important delivery for the city's road system.
The route that has been opened, in continuation of the side lane of Avenida Brasil from Caju, will use the streets Sá Freire, Conde de Leopoldina and Avenida Brasil until reaching Avenida Francisco Bicalho and will have the capacity to accommodate 3.000 vehicles per hour, reaching around 36 to 42 vehicles per day.
The Rio City Hall carried out infrastructure works on this route. The roads had their asphalt restored, with milling and resurfacing services. The vertical signage on the stretch was also restored, with new paint and the installation of several regulatory and warning signs. New traffic guidance signage is scheduled to be installed this Friday (1/12), with the aim of ensuring road safety on the stretch.
To guide drivers, CET-Rio traffic agents will be positioned along the route to monitor traffic and make any necessary adjustments. To access the Marcello Alencar Tunnel and the Bus Station, it is still recommended to use the central lane of Avenida Brasil.
Reopening will result in the resumption of the original routes of 63 lines by bus
