The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo received the keys to the Gasômetro land from the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, where the future stadium of the Rubro-Negro will be built. The agreement between the club, the city and Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF), granting possession of the land, was formalized on October 03 and announced in a video conference between Mayor Eduardo Paes, President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva and Rodolfo Landim, president of Flamengo.

The agreement puts an end to the legal battle between Caixa and Flamengo over the Gasômetro land, in the central region of Rio. CEF did not agree with the values proposed by Rubro-Negro for the acquisition of the space. The club purchased the 86.592 m² land, at Avenida São Cristóvão, 1.200, for the minimum price of R$138.195.000.

– As of today, the Gasômetro land belongs to the Red-Black Nation! – celebrated Mayor Eduardo Paes, highlighting the importance of the stadium for the city of Rio de Janeiro – This Flamengo project meets a need of the city, which is the revitalization of its central region, the port area, which has been abandoned and degraded for so long.

Eduardo Paes recalled that football is a very important economic activity for the city and that last year it generated R$4 billion, half of which came from Flamengo:

– This activates the economy, generates jobs and is very important for our city – said the mayor.

President Lula praised the partnership with the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting Eduardo Paes' commitment to bringing the stadium to the Gasômetro site.

– A team that has fans like Flamengo, the passion it represents, it is very important that it has its own football stadium. And I want to congratulate Flamengo – said Lula, joking about the mayor “who is a Vasco fan and looks more like a red-and-black fan”.

Rodolfo Landim thanked Mayor Eduardo Paes for his commitment and for the help that the city hall gave the club to overcome the various obstacles that arose throughout the process.

– As president of the club, I want to make it very clear that I am eternally grateful to the mayor for all the work he has done. It would be impossible to be here today celebrating this wonderful day if this had not happened.

For the municipal secretary of Government Coordination, Jorge Arraes, the construction of the stadium is very important for the continued revitalization of Porto Maravilha:

– I would dare say, with all due respect, that today is as important a day as the demolition of the Perimetral – he stated.

The city's attorney general, Daniel Bucar, recalled the difficulty of the entire negotiation with CEF, while the Sports Secretary, Guilherme Schleder, endorsed the economic importance of the future stadium:

– This will bring jobs, entertainment and people to our city – said the secretary.

The ceremony was also attended by federal deputy Pedro Paulo Carvalho (PSD), the Minister of Management and Innovation in Public Services, Esther Dweck, the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, and the president of Caixa, Carlos Vieira.
