The New São José Market, a future gastronomic and cultural hub in the heart of Laranjeiras, has just unveiled its new visual identity. Designed by Bruno Senise from GRAVE Estúdio (@muito.grave), the graphic design proposes a contemporary and affectionate look at the space, reinforcing its deep connection with the city and with the memories that span generations.
The initiative is part of a broad revitalization process led by the City of Rio, which, through negotiations between Mayor Eduardo Paes and the Ministry of Social Security, acquired the historic building and adjacent land from the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) for R$3 million. Following this achievement, the Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Investimentos (CCPar) launched a public call for proposals, bringing together three interested groups.
– In recent years, Rio de Janeiro City Hall has been working together with the private sector to restore leisure areas, parks and important buildings in the city, such as the Mercado São José building. By returning this gastronomic hub to the city, we are encouraging local culture and the economy – said Osmar Lima, the city’s Secretary of Economic Development.
The consortium formed by Junta Local and Engeprat, structured by Konek Transformação Imobiliária, was selected to manage the space for the next 25 years.

Mercadinho São José was transformed into a market in the early 40s. After decades of abandonment, the space was revitalized in 1988 and listed as a heritage site in 1994, becoming a cultural and gastronomic hub in the South Zone.
Closed since 2018, when the INSS judicially repossessed the property, the market is now being reborn with a new visual identity and proposal, projecting itself into the future without giving up the roots that transformed it into a symbol of the city. The New São José Market will be a space for sensory experiences, where the public can find selected local producers and experience the city's gastronomic culture in an authentic and vibrant environment.
