Rio is one of the cities that will be affected by rising sea levels - Credit: Disclosure/City Hall Mayor Eduardo Paes, by decree on August 28, ordered the creation of the Rio Committee for Scientific Studies on Rising Sea Levels. The objective is to immediately begin, in collaboration with research institutes in Brazil and other countries, studies, debates, research, surveys and the search for solutions to potential impacts that rising sea levels may have on the lives of the people of Rio. The committee will be composed of a technical group from the City Hall to, in addition to monitoring the situation, produce a scientific study and, if necessary, take preventive measures.
The creation of the committee is based on a report by the United Nations (UN), which indicates that, between 1990 and 2020, there was a 13-centimeter rise in sea level in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The study projects that, in the next 30 years, there will be a new increase of around 12 to 21 centimeters due to global warming.
The measure ratifies the role of global climate leadership of the city of Rio de Janeiro, which seeks to be among the pioneers in adopting preventive and corrective actions in environmental matters.
The committee will operate under the presidency of the Municipal Secretariat for Government Coordination (SMCG), which is responsible for coordinating all activities. The committee will also include the Municipal Secretariat for the Environment and Climate (SMAC), the Municipal Secretariat for Urban and Economic Development (SMDUE), the Pereira Passos Municipal Institute of Urbanism (IPP), the Rio Heritage Institute (IRPH), Rio-Águas and GEO-RIO.
