City Hall launches public consultation for the requalification of Bosque da Barra and Chico Mendes parks

Chico Mendes Park - Disclosure Rio continues to implement initiatives to become an increasingly sustainable, accessible, and welcoming city. This Wednesday (October 22nd), the City Hall is launching a public consultation and hearing for the redevelopment of the Bosque da Barra and Chico Mendes Municipal Natural Parks in the Southwest Zone. The initiative is part of the Parques Cariocas program, one of the largest urban green space redevelopment projects in the world.
More than R$14,6 million in investments are planned, with R$11,4 million in the first two years, to be provided by the private sector through concessions. The goal is to improve infrastructure and visitor services, as well as improve safety and accessibility in the parks.
"CCPar is the City Hall agency responsible for facilitating partnerships that transform public assets. We want Rio's leisure spaces to remain well-maintained, in addition to expanding the supply and quality of services, without losing their social and environmental value. Bosque da Barra and Chico Mendes are important spaces, which is why they are included in the program, ready to receive future private investment," stated Osmar Lima, Municipal Secretary of Economic Development.
Initiative benefits parks in the Southwest Zone
Several improvements are planned, including 24-hour security in both parks and the guarantee that access will remain free. Furthermore, the interventions must comply with the Management Plan for the Units, which are environmental conservation areas, defining rules of use and actions to protect the area's biodiversity and natural resources.
Planned improvements for Bosque da Barra include the installation of an observation tower, an elevated walkway, adventure activities, and two mandatory food outlets. The project also includes connecting the facilities to the sewer system, a comprehensive park renovation, and the refurbishment of the playgrounds and outdoor gyms.
Improvements to Chico Mendes Park include reopening the observation tower, installing a sensory garden, offering adventure activities, and adding a mandatory food court. The plan also includes a general renovation, upgrading the playground and outdoor gym, and regular cleaning of Lagoa das Taxas.
Socio-environmental initiatives and economic benefits
The notice provides that 1% to 3,5% of the revenue generated by the parks will be allocated to socio-environmental initiatives indicated by the City Hall, depending on the performance of the private partner in providing the services.
Over the 20-year contract, more than R$66 million in economic benefits are estimated for Rio, including direct investments, reduced maintenance costs and increased revenue.
Public hearing and consultation
The public hearing will be broadcast live on the CCPar YouTube Channel on November 11th at 11am. Those interested in making contributions should register at electronic form.
