Partnership aims to help create more efficient transit routes using Artificial Intelligence (AI) - Disclosure/City Hall After promising results in cities in Israel, Rio de Janeiro will be the next to implement research that uses Artificial Intelligence to generate traffic forecasts. The initiative aims to suggest actions to improve municipal traffic flow, promoting the reduction of carbon emissions. With the signing of this agreement with Google, Rio joins the select group of cities that have received this unique and innovative project.
So far, only a few cities in the state of Israel have had the opportunity to participate in this research, which will eventually be expanded to other locations around the world. This partnership between Google and CET-Rio aims to help create more efficient traffic routes using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and optimize the city's traffic light and intersection system.
The project focuses on studying and predicting traffic conditions and time spent at intersections in cities and, from this mobility data, training AI-based models to improve and coordinate traffic flow in cities.
– This project is a major step forward for the city’s mobility. The combination of Google data and technologies, such as Google Maps, and information from CET-Rio will make it possible to improve the city’s traffic light times more quickly, meaning that citizens will spend less time stuck in traffic. It is also good for the environment, as it helps reduce the emission of polluting gases – explains Rio’s mayor, Eduardo Paes.
In recent years, Artificial Intelligence has been a great ally in the area of urban mobility in large cities, helping residents to plan more efficient routes by examining real-time traffic information and also in developing solutions for more complex challenges in society, such as climate change and environmental preservation.
The project will be implemented in the coming months. The first locations in the city where the study will be carried out will soon be announced.
For the president of CET-Rio, Joaquim Dinis, this partnership with a giant company like Google puts Rio at the forefront of the use of technology to improve mobility in the city.
