- The city receives the "Yellow May Highlights 2026" award for actions taken to reduce traffic accidents.
The Estácio de Sá Monument was one of those illuminated in yellow to draw the public's attention - Press Release The municipality of Rio de Janeiro received the “Yellow May Highlights 2026” award on Thursday (June 25th), granted by the National Road Safety Observatory (ONSV), a non-profit institution dedicated to mobilizing society to reduce traffic fatality rates. The ceremony was held in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, where the ONSV also celebrated its 15th anniversary.
The trophy was received by the Traffic Education Coordinator of CET-Rio, Mauro Ferreira, who represented the municipality in the mobilization of the Yellow May campaign held throughout the month of May. The campaign involved the participation of several other departments of the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, such as CET-Rio, the Municipal Guard, Rioluz, and the Health, Education, and Transportation Secretariats, in addition to Detran-RJ, the Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (INTO), Rio Ônibus, among other partners.
With the theme "In traffic, seeing others saves lives," the Yellow May campaign featured a series of awareness and accident prevention actions aimed at drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians at strategic points in the city, such as Quinta da Boa Vista, the Sambadrome, and the Two Wheels Stop in Botafogo. Several monuments were also illuminated in yellow to draw the public's attention, including Christ the Redeemer, the Lapa Arches, the Rio Art Museum, and the Estácio de Sá monument.
The coordinator of Traffic Education, Mauro Ferreira, thanked them for the tribute to Rio de Janeiro and praised the theme chosen for this year's campaign.
— Seeing others saves lives and goes far beyond simply seeing others at the moment of action in traffic. It's recognizing that traffic is a collective space and everyone has the right to circulate safely. It's an opportunity for us to carry out actions throughout the year, but with a greater level of visibility and engagement, and the participation of various municipal, state, and federal agencies, as well as civil society and the media. Yellow May has become a globally recognized brand and will strengthen many actions from now on — he emphasized.
