  • Rio City Hall details the closures on access from Avenida Brasil to Avenida Francisco Bicalho for works at the Gentileza Terminal
Traffic changes are for the Gentileza Terminal works - Archive/City of Rio

The Rio City Hall will begin, at 22 pm this Friday (16/9), the closures on the access from Avenida Brasil to Avenida Francisco Bicalho, to facilitate the construction of the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal. The details of the changes in traffic and the diversions of bus lines were announced this Wednesday (14/9) by the Municipal Department of Transportation, CET-Rio and Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Investimentos (CCPar).

Major traffic changes

The main diversion route to access Avenida Francisco Bicalho is to use the Gasômetro Viaduct.

Vehicles heading to Avenida Francisco Bicalho that choose not to use the Gasômetro Viaduct will be able to access the alternative route via Rua Santos Lima, Rua Benedito Otoni, Rua São Cristóvão and Avenida Pedro II.

Vehicles from the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (INTO) region must go to Avenida Rodrigues Alves or Via B4. Vehicles wishing to go to the North Zone from INTO must use the route via Via B4, access Via Binário – towards the Bus Station, Rua General Luís Mendes de Moraes and Rua Francisco Eugênio. To go to the South Zone, the Marcello Alencar Tunnel can be used, via Avenida Rodrigues Alves, or the Santa Bárbara Tunnel, via the route via Via B4, Via Binário, Avenida Professor Pereira Reis, Largo do Santo Cristo and Elevado 31 de Março.

– We have around 25 thousand vehicles using this access today, most of which are buses. Our concern is to guide drivers and passengers about the new routes and stops. The main access from Avenida Brasil to Francisco Bicalho is already the Viaduto do Gasômetro, it does not go underneath – stated the president of CET-Rio, Joaquim Dinis.

To improve traffic flow, the alternative route underwent several adjustments to its geometry, vertical (signs) and horizontal (painting) signage, in addition to the installation of new traffic lights. Avenida Francisco Bicalho, together with Avenida Brasil, form one of the main access routes to the city of Rio. After the completion of the Gentileza Terminal construction, scheduled for the end of 2023, the side lane of Avenida Brasil will be restored and drivers will be able to access Avenida Francisco Bicalho normally.

The closures will involve the participation of traffic operators, including CET-Rio agents and supporters, who will work to maintain fluidity, guide drivers and set up roadblocks during the intervention. In addition, extensive signage is being installed to inform and guide drivers and other road users about the changes, through signs, banners, pamphlets and variable message panels. The traffic light schedule in the region is being reviewed and will be adjusted to the new traffic conditions in the immediate vicinity of the construction site and on alternative routes.

Access to the side lane of Avenida Francisco Bicalho will be via internal roads in São Cristóvão

The following are the changes to the itinerary of municipal bus lines:

They will turn around on Pedro II Avenue and continue along Pedro II Avenue until Francisco Bicalho Avenue.

– The companies are already aware of both the municipal and intercity lines. There will be signs at the original bus stops informing users where to go to catch their lines. We will also have inspectors from the department in the first few days to guide the public. CET-Rio will also be distributing pamphlets with guidance for drivers – explained the Secretary of Transportation, Maína Celidonio.

Bus stops

The bus stop located on Avenida Francisco Bicalho, towards the city center, near Avenida Brasil, will be closed. The closest bus stop to board the bus lines that go to Avenida Francisco Bicalho is on Avenida Pedro II, in front of the Public Depot, near Avenida Francisco Bicalho. (Note: There will be an information board at the 1st stop on Avenida Francisco Bicalho, towards the city center, before Avenida Pedro II).

Passengers boarding at Rua Santos Lima, in front of number 3, to catch lines 472 and 473, should go to Rua Figueira de Melo, in front of number 425. (Note: There will be an information sign at the stop at Rua Santos Lima, number 3, near the corner with Avenida Brasil).

Passengers will not lose bus stops on Avenida Brasil, between Rua Santos Lima and Av. Francisco Bicalho, as there were no stops on this stretch due to the Transbrasil works.

An intercity bus stop will be created on Avenida Francisco Bicalho, central lane, towards Avenida Presidente Vargas, so that buses coming from Viaduto do Gasômetro can board and disembark passengers to serve, mainly, passengers heading to the bus station.

Recommendations

– Respect the signs and instructions of traffic agents for the smooth running of the operation.

– Drivers who do not need to pass through the construction area must use alternative routes for their journeys.
