Photo: CET-Rio Press Release The Rio de Janeiro City Hall will expand the city's network of motorcycle lanes with the implementation of eight more kilometers of dedicated lanes for motorcyclists. This measure continues the expansion plan initiated in May of this year and aims to organize motorcycle traffic, increase road safety, and contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents.
The new motorcycle lanes will be implemented on the Engenheiro Fernando Mac Dowell Highway, in the direction of Barra da Tijuca, between Avenida Niemeyer and Avenida Embaixador Gabriel Landa, as well as on Avenida Engenheiro Freyssinet and the Rufino de Almeida Pizarro Elevated Highway, in both directions. The decree authorizing the implementation was published in the Official Gazette of the Municipality this Tuesday (04/08), and the expectation is that the new sections, totaling eight kilometers, will be completed within 60 days.
– The expansion of motorcycle lanes aims to organize motorcycle traffic, increase road safety, and contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents. Motorcyclists are among the main victims of these accidents in the city, and this initiative reinforces CET-Rio's commitment to preserving lives – stated the president of CET-Rio, Marize Queiroz Ribeiro.
On Monday (August 3rd), CET-Rio completed the implementation of 19 kilometers of motorcycle lanes on the Lagoa-Barra axis, encompassing Borges de Medeiros and Epitácio Pessoa avenues, Mário Ribeiro Street, the Rafael Mascarenhas Acoustic Tunnel, and Padre Leonel Franca Avenue. With this stage completed, the company has already begun preparations for the implementation of the next phase on Engenheiro Freyssinet Avenue, with the removal of existing signage to mark the preferential lane in blue and white.
Motorcycle lanes function as priority lanes for motorcyclists, especially in slow-moving traffic situations. Other vehicles may use them only during lane change maneuvers, always with due caution.
The city's first motorcycle lane was implemented in 2024 on the Engenheiro Fernando Mac Dowell Highway in São Conrado, heading towards Lagoa, with a length of two kilometers. Subsequently, the corridor formed by Avenida Rei Pelé and Rua Teixeira Soares, in Maracanã, received another 4,1 kilometers of dedicated lanes, distributed in both directions: Centro and Méier.
