Program A Caminho da Escola 2.0 arrives around the school in Penha Circular

The "On the Way to School 2.0" Program has already been implemented around a school in Penha Circular - Disclosure CET-Rio, in partnership with the Subprefecture of the North Zone and the Municipal Department of Education, is implementing the interventions of the A Caminho da Escola 2.0 program in the surroundings of the João de Deus Municipal School, in the Penha Circular neighborhood, starting this Wednesday (27/4). The program, which served the school before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, carried out its pedagogical and teacher training stages and had the risk scenario of the unit's surroundings prepared by the students, so that from now on, with the resumption of the program, it will implement the urban interventions proposed by the school community.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, traffic is the main cause of death among children aged 5 to 14 in Brazil. With the resumption of classes and the increase in the number of children on the streets, traffic safety measures are becoming even more urgent. Between January and August 2021 alone, the SUS has already reported more than six thousand children and young people hospitalized in serious condition due to accidents in Brazil.
Seeking to reverse this scenario, CET-Rio, in partnership with the Municipal Department of Education, launches the On the Way to School 2.0 Traffic Education Program.
The guiding principles of the program are
– Invite the school community to think about the city in partnership with the public authorities;
– Promote the creation of a public space of excellence, which serves as a catalyst for good practices;
– Create a sense of belonging within the school community in relation to public spaces and urban facilities, so that students become multipliers of these good practices.
CET-Rio intends to carry out at least 18 urban interventions per year, focusing on road safety and improving conditions for pedestrians and cyclists around the schools. All of these interventions will be carried out in partnership with the school community, following the following steps:
Choice of schools
– Analysis of road conditions around schools;
– Collection of data on traffic accidents.
Educational action and diagnosis/listening to the community
– CET-Rio will bring existing educational projects to the school environment, to introduce the subject and stimulate discussion about road safety;
– Preparation of the risk map by the school community;
– Knowledge of the characteristics of the place, both physical and usage;
Project Development
– Definition of the objectives to be achieved;
– Project development with the school community
Implementation of interventions
– Carrying out changes to the roads;
– Horizontal / vertical / traffic light signaling (as applicable);
– Presence of a CET-Rio traffic controller during the first days after implementation, to guide the population about the changes made;
Data collect
Measurement of results achieved, such as community satisfaction and reduction in the number of traffic accidents.
