Team Rio athletes achieve qualifications for the World Swimming Championships in Singapore

Photos: CBDA/Disclosure Team Rio athletes Maria Fernanda Costa, Gabrielle Roncatto and Guilherme Costa achieved the qualifications for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, the first major qualifier of the competition. The marks were achieved at the Brazilian Absolute Swimming Championship – Maria Lenk Trophy, held at Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, in Rio de Janeiro.
– I am very happy that Team Rio athletes are flying high at the beginning of this new Olympic cycle. I want to congratulate all three of them for their excellent results. Now it’s time to go all out with Singapore! – says the municipal secretary of Sports, Guilherme Schleder.
In the men's 400m freestyle, Guilherme Costa swam in 3min45s35, comfortably qualifying (the cut-off time was 3min48s15).
– This is my best time swimming in Brazil. This shows that we are on the right track to do well in the World Championships. Now it is time to follow the established plan, reach altitude and improve even more – celebrates Guilherme.
In the women's competition, Maria Fernanda Costa won the event with a time of 4min06s30, surpassing the minimum time required of 4min10s23. Gabrielle Roncatto came in second place with a time of 4min06s53 — also within the cutoff time for the World Championship. Mafê also secured the cutoff time for the World Championship in the women's 200m freestyle with a time of 1min57s60 — also within the cutoff time.
– I am happy to secure my place in another World Cup on the first day of Maria Lenk – says Maria Fernanda.
Created in 2010 and terminated in 2016, the Time Rio project was resumed in March 2022 and helped prepare athletes for the Pan American and Parapan American Games in Santiago in 2023, and for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The project is expected to be expanded with the support of the City of Niterói, due to the joint bid of the two cities to host the 2031 Pan American Games in Brazil.
