Vaccination campaign extended until September 12th in the city.

The Municipal Health Department (SMS) of Rio de Janeiro has extended the multi-vaccination campaign for children and adolescents under 15 years of age until September 12th throughout the city. Started on August 3rd, the initiative was extended to give parents and guardians the opportunity to update their children's vaccination schedules. To date, the target audience of the campaign has already received 167 doses of the offered vaccines. One statistic highlights the adherence of the Rio de Janeiro population to immunization: of the more than 107 vaccination records evaluated by health teams, approximately 51% were already up to date.

The goal of the campaign is to expand vaccination coverage, update the vaccination status of children and adolescents, and facilitate access to vaccines. Immunization is being carried out selectively, meaning each vaccination record is evaluated by health teams, and only the doses necessary to bring vaccinations up to date are administered. The most administered vaccines so far in the campaign have been against influenza (36.528 doses), IPV (16.626), COVID-19 (10.704), pentavalent (10.394), and yellow fever (10.186).

All vaccines included in the National Immunization Schedule are available at health units and extra vaccination points, according to the age group and vaccination status of each child or adolescent. Among the vaccines available for children are BCG, hepatitis A and B, pentavalent, polio (VIP), rotavirus, pneumococcal, meningococcal C, yellow fever, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), varicella, DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), influenza, and COVID-19. For adolescents, there will be vaccines against HPV (9 to 19 years), meningococcal ACWY (11 to 14 years), dengue (10 to 14 years), and influenza.

Currently, one of the diseases causing concern is measles, which has been registering an increase in cases, mainly in São Paulo. Vaccination is the main form of prevention, and protection is provided by the MMR vaccine, available at health units throughout the campaign.

Vaccines are safe and can be administered on the same day, allowing the vaccination record to be updated in a single visit to the health unit. In general, contraindications are rare and are limited to cases of severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or to any component of the vaccine. In case of any adverse event after vaccination, caregivers should contact the unit where the dose was administered for evaluation and follow-up.

For vaccination, parents or guardians must present the child's or adolescent's identification document and, whenever possible, the vaccination record or proof of vaccination, so that the health team can assess the vaccination history.

Vaccinations are available at all 241 Primary Care units (family clinics and municipal health centers) in the city and at the Super Centro Carioca de Vacinação units in Botafogo (open every day from 8 am to 22 pm), in the West Zone (at ParkShoppingCampoGrande, following the shopping mall's opening hours) and in the North Zone (Shopping Nova América).
