The Jaé Card will be mandatory on municipal transport starting this Saturday (02/08)

Starting Saturday (02/08), the use of the Jaé card will be mandatory for boarding municipal buses, BRT, VLT and legalized vans. This Thursday (31/07), Mayor Eduardo Paes, Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere and the Municipal Secretary of Transportation, Maína Celidonio, presented the latest data on the new ticketing system at the Operations and Resilience Center (COR).

There are already over 3,3 million registrations in Jaé. In July, 22 million trips were registered. Today, the number of daily trips with the card is 1,1 million.

"We've reached the big day. It's been an arduous, long, and challenging journey, but today we can reaffirm that it's entirely possible to maintain the August 2nd date for the start of Jaé's exclusive municipal transportation system. It's a very important transformation for the city, for the transportation system, and especially for the poorest population that depends on public transportation," declared Eduardo Paes.

956.771 workers registered to use transportation vouchers. The total top-up amount for transportation vouchers in July was R$125.106.142,52. Compared to June, requests for transportation vouchers increased by 672%.

To date, 1,37 million physical cards have been delivered to stores and mailed to applicants' homes. More than 161 cards are in stores for pickup, and 38.254 cards are in production.

"Rio residents heeded our calls and organized themselves, reaching 96% of transit voucher users by recharging their Jaé cards and registering over 400 free passes. Our request, especially to seniors, is to avoid going to the stations this Friday, the day before the exclusive Jaé operation in Rio, unless necessary. It's crucial to remember that any senior can use public transportation by simply presenting their ID," emphasized Eduardo Cavaliere.

The BRT system has dedicated ticket booths for the Jaé card, located at 100 stations and totaling 114 points of sale. At these locations, passengers can purchase the card and top up with cash, expanding service options and facilitating access to the new ticketing system.

The Bilhete Único Carioca (BUC) transfers for the R$4,70 fare are only valid with Jaé. The benefit includes up to three transfers within three hours when using the BRT, and up to two transfers with other modes of transport—municipal buses, VLT, and vans—on other trips.

"We've seen significant growth over the past month, which gives us confidence in the system's consistency. The most important message now, as the August 2nd milestone approaches, is for companies and their HR departments: contact Jaé and register via the website or phone. We know there's been a large volume of registrations, but there are still a few companies that haven't topped up their employees. It's crucial that this be done today (July 31st) or tomorrow (August 07st)," said Secretary Maína Celidonio.

With the installation of Jaé validators at Metro stations, passengers using the integrated system with municipal transport will be able to use the new ticketing system starting this Saturday (August 2nd). These validators will be exclusively for paying Jaé passengers using black and green cards. Jaé free tickets will not be accepted on the Metro, so only the green and black cards will be valid.

Lines: 133, 209, 513, 603, 608, 611, 614, 616 and 913

Subway + vans:

Lines: 2101 (via Av. Niemeyer) and 2102 (via Rocinha)

Subway + BRT:

Integrations available at Jardim Oceânico (Barra) and Vicente de Carvalho (North Zone) stations

Intermunicipal Single Ticket (BUI) and Social Tariff users will continue to use their Riocard card, which is the only way to access state benefits—such as the reduced R$5 subway fare. These passengers must board using Riocard validators on both intercity and municipal transportation.

Strengthened service network

To facilitate adaptation to the new system, the City Hall expanded and strengthened its in-person service network. The 19 stations throughout the city are open from 7 a.m. to 19 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Six of them operate as Super Stations, with increased service capacity: the Municipal Employee Club (Cidade Nova), the Knowledge Ship (Engenho de Dentro), the Miécimo da Silva Sports Center (Campo Grande), the Deodoro Olympic Village, the Gávea Planetarium, and the Portuguese Recreational Club (Taquara).

However, the recommendation is that users prioritize the digital platform. Once registered through the app, users can now use Jaé using the generated QR Code. Users aged 65 and over are exempt from the R$7,95 fee for home delivery of the physical card if they choose this option.

How to Acquire Jaé

Hiring of Jaé by companies

Employees who use transportation vouchers must purchase the Jaé card directly from their employers. The process is entirely online, through the jae.com.br/empresas platform. HR or company managers can register employees and manage the benefit through this platform.

General public

You can download the app from your phone's online store, follow the registration instructions, and start using Jaé virtually on your phone. Once you register, you can request a free physical black card. You can have the card delivered to your home for a fee of R$7,95. Alternatively, you can visit one of the service locations.

You can also purchase the card at the Self-Service Machines located at BRT stations and terminals, and get a separate card, which is a green card. This card cannot be associated with your account in the app.

Intercity Single Ticket

For the Intermunicipal Single Ticket (BUI), the Riocard card will continue to be used on municipal transportation systems, using their own validators, exclusively by those eligible for the benefit. For non-integrated journeys that require separate payment, two cards will be required: the Riocard for state transportation and the Jaé card for the municipal system.
