COR - Jorge Pex/City of Rio

The Rio Operations Center (COR) and the company Surf Connect, which has cameras operating 24 hours a day on the coast, signed a technical cooperation agreement on Wednesday (05/05) that will guarantee COR full access to images from these devices. The partnership, which does not involve any cost to the City Hall, will add 14 Full HD cameras from Surf Connect to the system for monitoring incidents that may impact the daily lives of Rio residents. In this way, the agreement provides for an improvement in the response time to problems in this region.

The new images that arrive on the COR screen are configured to show the sea, the sandbank and the boardwalk. Therefore, they are not considered to be traffic monitoring or public safety equipment. COR and the City Hall departments that it is part of can consult the images to observe weather conditions and estimate wave heights. One of its main functions is to observe the impacts caused by the sea on rough days.

– COR has a knack for establishing partnerships that benefit the people of Rio. The agreement with Surf Connect is yet another fruit of this work. With more eyes on Rio’s coastline, we have the chance to act more quickly on problems that are identified by camera images – explains Bruno Ramos, COR’s Chief Executive.

Lauro Souza, founder of Surf Connect, believes that the partnership with COR is an opportunity to gain recognition and to be able to help Rio.

– The images from our cameras will allow, for example, the COR to contact Comlurb more quickly when necessary – explains Lauro.

The coverage area of the 14 cameras begins in Leme and passes through Copacabana; Praia do Diabo; Ipanema; the beginning and end of Leblon; São Conrado; the beginning, middle and end of Barra da Tijuca; Praia da Reserva; Recreio; and the beginning and end of Macumba. The counterpart provided for in the signed agreement is that publications made on COR's communication channels correctly record the credit for the images to Surf Conect.
