With a repertoire featuring axé music hits, the Chame Gente group opened the second weekend of Rio's Street Carnival, this Saturday (8/2), celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Bahian rhythm. In a parade that lasted about five hours, on São Conrado Beach, the group was led by singer Alexandre Peixe, with a special appearance by the former lead singer of the band Cheiro de Amor, Márcia Freire. In addition to the opening act, three other groups entertained revelers throughout the city.

– Another year with you. We live another special day, with lots of axé, positivity and spirit to celebrate the 40 years of axé -, said Alexandre Peixe, who has led the block party for seven years.

Inspired by the song “Chame Gente” by Moraes Moreira and Armandinho Macedo, the traditional bloco has been partying on the streets of Rio for almost 20 years. In 2025, the group will also celebrate the fusion of Bahian and Rio de Janeiro rhythms, with classics such as “Faraó” by Margareth Menezes and “Canto da Cidade” by Daniela Mercury.

– I’m super happy to be here. Rio has the same vibe as Bahia, so it’s guaranteed to be energetic. It’s been forty years of axé, forty years taking our music to Brazil. And it’s really great to see this sun and the people here enjoying it – celebrated Márcia Freire, who in her debut at the Rio carnival got the revelers in São Conrado excited with the sound of “Vai Sacudir, Vai Abalar”.

With a diverse audience, Chama Gente showed that the party in Rio is for the whole family. Vivian and Érica Pires, mother and daughter, enjoyed the bloco wearing identical costumes that they made themselves. The two, in their second year following the group, always go out together and praised the safety.

– She has been with me in the blocks since she was in the womb. So, we have been playing together for 19 years. We love Carnival and we always look the same in every block we participate in, with costumes that we make ourselves. This is our second time at Chame Gente, which has a very family atmosphere, old Bahian music, and it is very safe -, said Vivian.

In the afternoon, in downtown Rio, the “Independente do Morro do Pinto” group livened up the Santo Cristo region. The procession has been parading in the city since 1972, with residents from the communities of Morro da Providência, Conceição and the one that bears the same name as the group.

The president of the Port League, which brings together the blocks in this region of the city, Rosiete Marinho, highlighted the historical and social role played by the block.

– It is truly a block of the people, which tells our story. These blocks here in the region are our origin, they carry the foundation of our community -, stated Rosiete.

The festivities in the city also included the “Carnaval and Bloco Folia do Largo do Sapê” blocks, in Bento Ribeiro, and the “Bloco da Praia” block, in Pedra de Guaratiba, in the West Zone.

The party continues this Sunday (9/2), with the parade of 10 more blocks, led by the newcomer SeráQAbre?, the only mega block this weekend. Among the highlights are the children's groups “Mini Seres do Mar”, in Flamengo, and “Caminhadinha”, in Humaitá, “Só Caminha”, in Largo dos Leões; “Banda Cultural do Jiló”, in Tijuca, “GRBC Turma do Gato Futebol e Samba”, in Pilares, and “Xodó da Piedade”, in Piedade.

Operational Plan for Street Carnival 2025

Expected to attract around 6 million people over 37 days of festivities, the 2025 Street Carnival will feature around 9 performances spread across several regions of Rio until March 480. The city center will host 128 parades, but the festivities will also be held in the North, South and West zones, as well as in Grande Tijuca, Ilhas and Jacarepaguá.

To ensure that the public enjoys the party safely and comfortably, the City Hall, through Riotur, has prepared a large operational scheme involving CET-Rio, the Municipal Health Department (SMS), Comlurb, the Public Order Department (Seop) and the Rio Municipal Guard (GM-Rio), among other bodies, which will operate at the event locations and in the surrounding areas.

The complete schedule of the processions, with date, time and route, is available on the Blocos do Rio 2025 app, on all digital platforms. The tool is free and works by geolocation. The list is also available on the website  https://www.carnavalderua.rio/, which brings together, in addition to the parade calendar, news about the blocks and more information about Rio Street Carnival 2025.
