In an unprecedented move that prioritizes the adoption of clean and renewable sources as an alternative to hydroelectric power, the City of Rio will purchase energy on the free market, that is, without the intermediation of a concessionaire. The measure is a project of the Municipal Department of Finance and Planning, focusing on the use of wind and solar energy, and will be applied to the supply of the São Sebastião Administrative Center (CASS), in Cidade Nova. The expected savings are R$4,5 million per year in public accounts.

The supply of green energy will be made possible by a tender launched this Friday (11/11), for direct purchase from generators, for a period of 60 months. The initiative will allow the City Hall to increase the range of options for this type of negotiation. There are currently around 490 retail trading companies on the market, with prices that can lead to a 41% reduction in the current tariff.

The project will be highlighted this Friday in the programming of the second edition of Rio Innovation Week (RIW), in the panel “Energy Efficiency: first city hall to buy clean energy”. The technology, innovation and business event will take place at Píer Mauá.

– Everyone wins with this project: the municipality, which saves money by opening up more options for purchasing energy; the citizens, who will see the best use of their tax money; and the environment, with the adoption of clean and renewable energy – says the Secretary of Finance and Planning, Andrea Senko.

According to the Undersecretary of People and Shared Management of SMFP, Roberta Guimarães, the objective is to expand the pilot project to all structures in the municipality, such as hospitals, schools and public companies:

– In addition to the City Hall headquarters, we are studying the implementation of green energy in another 20 municipal facilities, with an estimated annual savings of R$32 million.
