The city of Rio de Janeiro has 1,97 million women who are mothers. This number represents 64,7% of all women in the capital. The survey was conducted by the City of Rio, through the Municipal Secretariat for Urban and Economic Development (SMDUE), based on figures from the IBGE National Health Survey.
If education is considered, while 64,6% of mothers have completed high school, in the group of women without children the rate is 72,9%. This difference in education may be related to age, since the younger generations have a higher level of education than the older ones.
The per capita household income of mothers is slightly higher (R$3.585) compared to the income of women in Rio de Janeiro without children (R$3.371), in current values.
– Last year, Rio de Janeiro had 3,3 million people in employment, almost 50% of whom were women. It is essential that we continue working to provide more opportunities for women and support for mothers, so that they can work and pursue their careers, knowing that their children are studying or being well cared for – declared Chicão Bulhões, municipal secretary of Urban and Economic Development.
Data from the IBGE Civil Registry Statistics, also compiled by SMDUE, also indicate that the number of birth registrations in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in 2022, was 64 thousand. Of this total, 6 thousand births (9,4%) were of children of young mothers, under 20 years old; 29,7 thousand births (46,4%) of children of mothers between the ages of 20 and 29; 24,4 thousand births (38,2%) of children of mothers aged 30 to 39; and 3,7 thousand births (5,9%) of children of mothers aged 40 or over.
