With the aim of promoting paid motorcycle transport services, City Hall launches the Moto.Rio app

Motorcycle taxi drivers will register at the Server Club over the weekend - Archive/City Hall of Rio Rio de Janeiro City Hall launched, this Thursday (16/3), the first phase of the Moto.Rio app, developed by the Municipal Information Technology Company (IplanRio), in partnership with the Municipal Department of Transportation (SMTR). The app will facilitate the option of accessible transportation. The launch brought together dozens of motorcycle taxi drivers and union representatives at the City Palace.
– Moto.Rio has no fees, but it is paid for with your taxes. This is what allows the City to not charge anything. With the app, we will allow you to have a relationship with the passenger without having to pay anything to anyone, taking all the money home, because you are the ones providing the service. We are allowing you to become legal, which brings more responsibilities, but will also value and qualify your work. This initial phase is very important, so register. From the moment you are registered and regulated, the story of being informal, of not having respect from public authorities and living as if it were a side business is over. As of today, motorcycle taxi drivers are officially recognized by the City as a means of transportation – stated Mayor Eduardo Paes.
This first phase will allow those interested in working with the app to pre-register and also map the number of qualified motorcycle taxi drivers. Information required to start providing the service includes driver's license, CPF, full name, email and vehicle license plate. The data will be analyzed by the City Hall.
– Today is a very special day for motorcycle taxi drivers in the city of Rio. We are showing that this category is a means of transportation for the city. The population, especially the poorest, uses motorcycle taxis a lot. The app is a tool for generating jobs and improving the quality of life for many people. Today is a milestone, a turning point in the relationship between the City Hall and motorcycle taxi drivers – said the Chief of Staff, Eduardo Cavaliere.
Initially, the app will be used exclusively for interested motorcycle taxi drivers to pre-register. When the first rides begin, the app will work in a similar way to Taxi.Rio. The Moto.Rio app is available for free download on Android smartphones on Google Play. The City Hall expects to start the first rides in May.
– I have been talking to the category since the beginning of my term, you know how much I like motorcycle taxis. We ask that you register so that we can get to know the 30 thousand motorcycle taxi drivers in the city and, thus, launch a great application – declared the Secretary of Transportation, Maína Celidonio.
The motorcycle fleet in the city of Rio is around 370 thousand, with an increase of around 68% between 2012 and 2022. It is estimated that there are 30 thousand motorcycle taxi drivers in circulation in the city.
– This category that suffers so much, that works informally, is being recognized for the first time. The City of Rio has helped the union, and the creation of the app, without charging fees, is something that only the City of Rio can do. Today we are taking a very important step for the category. I hope that Rio becomes an example for all of Brazil – said the president of the Union of Motorcycle Taxi Drivers of the Municipality of Rio, Krishna de Campos.
