The project envisions commercial and social spaces in the area, with improvements to pedestrian circulation and accessibility.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall began, this Monday (April 13th), the requalification works of the Campo Grande pedestrian mall, in the West Zone. The plan was developed by the Municipal Urbanization Company (Rio-Urbe) and the execution will be the responsibility of the Municipal Infrastructure Secretariat (SMI). The intervention aims to reorganize one of the main commercial and social spaces in the region, with improvements in pedestrian circulation, accessibility, urban identity and enhancement of historical heritage. Approximately 14,000 square meters of public area will be revitalized. The investment is R$ 17,2 million.

Among the main interventions is the restoration of the original design of the pavement, created by Burle Marx. Uneven and irregular pavements will be replaced and standardized with new coverings, including interlocking pavers and strips of sawn granite on the edges of the walkway for greater slip resistance and safety. The works will follow accessibility standards and include urban redevelopment with the restoration of flowerbeds, planters, benches, sculptures, lighting, and other urban elements.

The intervention encompasses existing sections of the pedestrian walkway on Coronel Agostinho Street, part of Barcelos Domingos Street, and Major de Almeida Street, as well as an expansion to Viúva Dantas Street. In this expansion area, the road will be leveled with the sidewalk, increasing the space for pedestrians.

The project also includes the reorganization and expansion of loading and unloading areas, with specific service routes. The pedestrian walkway will receive 41 containers with approximately 100 standardized commercial stalls. New access portals and totems will be installed, referencing Burle Marx's design, providing informational resources and tactile elements, to organize access, reinforce visual identity, and highlight the history of the space.

With these interventions, the revitalization of the Campo Grande pedestrian mall will improve circulation, accessibility, and space for people to stay in the public area, as well as strengthen the urban identity and support local businesses.

Urban history and importance

The Campo Grande pedestrian mall emerged in the 1970s and was inaugurated in 1976 on Rua Coronel Agostinho, near the train station and the neighborhood's bus terminal. With a landscape design by Roberto Burle Marx, it is the main commercial area of the most populous neighborhood in the country. A significant thoroughfare, the space represents the daily life of Campo Grande: it brings together commerce, services, and cherished memories. The revitalization preserves this history, restores original elements of the design, and prepares the pedestrian mall to continue playing a central role in the urban life of the neighborhood.
