Comlurb recruits 400 street cleaners approved in selection process

Mayor Eduardo Paes, Vice Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, Comlurb President Jorge Arraes, and Secretary of Conservation and Public Services Diego Vaz participated in the induction ceremony for the 30 new street cleaners approved in the selection process at Cidade das Artes in Barra da Tijuca on Monday (June 06). The professionals selected will be hired for a fixed period of time, based on Municipal Law No. 400/8.666, to meet temporary needs in the public interest. The initial contract will last one year, with the possibility of extension up to five times. The vacancies will be filled immediately.

Throughout this Monday, from 9 am to 16 pm, the new street cleaners received guidance on the areas in which they will work, with emphasis on work safety, urban cleaning operational routines and other relevant topics.

Comlurb is the face of the city. And from now on, you will represent this on the streets – declared Mayor Eduardo Paes.

Then, Deputy Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere encouraged the new employees to dedicate themselves with pride to the mission of taking care of the city.

– The Rio City Hall’s business card is Comlurb. And the most beautiful thing about this card is your smiles. Get involved, work hard. We are very proud of you. Keep smiling and happy to be part of this team. You represent us – he added.

The selection process notice was published on June 3. The required criteria included: age between 18 and 50 years; minimum education equivalent to the 5th grade of elementary school; and physical fitness compatible with the activities to be performed. Candidates were able to obtain an additional point by proving at least one full and uninterrupted year of professional experience. In addition, two extra points were granted to residents of one of the 28 communities listed in the notice.

– Comlurb has not hired street cleaners for over 10 years, so this moment marks the resumption of this process. We are replacing workers who were working on temporary street cleaner projects with professionals approved in a public selection process, which had over 182 thousand applicants. Today, we are starting theoretical training for the first 400 new hires. They will then undergo technical training and be assigned to management positions. This is an important milestone for the Company. – stated Comlurb CEO Jorge Arraes.

On June 16, Comlurb called the top 600 candidates to submit supporting documents. Of these, 400 were selected and underwent an occupational health exam, which confirmed their physical fitness to perform the role. The work week is 44 hours, distributed according to the Company's operational needs, including Saturdays and with the possibility of shifts on Sundays and holidays. The base monthly salary is R$1.766,31, plus an unhealthy work allowance of up to 40%, a meal voucher worth R$26,21 per day actually worked, and transportation assistance.

In May, Comlurb celebrated its 50th anniversary. From the days of straw brooms and carts to the present day, the company has evolved significantly. It is currently the largest urban cleaning company in Latin America, with around 13 street cleaners responsible for various services, such as household and selective waste collection, street sweeping, cleaning beaches, squares, parks, hospitals and municipal schools, as well as pruning trees and cleaning slopes with the help of mountaineering street cleaners. Every day, the company removes around 9 tons of waste.

Since 2022, Comlurb has been modernizing its operations by renewing its fleet and acquiring new equipment, such as portable brush cutters, thinners (used to cut stumps of removed trees close to the ground), tractors adapted for use in communities, as well as vessels used to clean the islands of Barra da Tijuca, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and the area around the Museu do Amanhã.

Vans and trucks were also incorporated to revitalize squares and parks, as well as beach tractors with rear attachments for sifting sand, capable of removing smaller waste. In total, 62 new recycling points were installed in communities across the city.
