Around 2 sanitation workers participated in the special cleaning operation - Marcos de Paula / Rio City Hall The show by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira, which rocked the sands of Copacabana Beach this Saturday (May 2nd), resulted in the removal of 362 tons of waste. The cleanup operation involved approximately 2,000 sanitation workers, from pre-cleaning on Friday (May 1st) until the completion of the work in the early hours of Sunday (May 3rd). The teams will continue to clean up throughout the day. Lady Gaga's show in 2025 generated 392 tons of waste.
Shakira's free concert, part of the "Everyone in Rio" project, featured a unique operational cleaning plan, similar to that used for the New Year's Eve celebrations in Copacabana. Approximately 2 sanitation workers were distributed in shifts and organized by strategic sectors, covering the beach, bike paths, boardwalk, Avenida Atlântica, and main access roads, including the areas around the Cardeal Arcoverde and Cantagalo metro stations. More than 200 vehicles and equipment were used, including collection trucks, beach tractors, and water tankers for hydraulic cleaning with reused water and the application of 2 liters of detergent and 500 liters of eucalyptus essence.
The president of Comlurb, Renato Rodrigues, monitored the cleaning service on Saturday night and Sunday morning, and emphasized the importance of the teams' work:
– The city hosted another massive event and rose to the occasion. In just a few hours, Copacabana awoke clean, demonstrating the operational capacity and commitment of the City Hall and Comlurb (the city's sanitation company) to Rio. Congratulations to all the professionals involved, especially our sanitation workers. This is the standard we have established in Rio – emphasized Renato Rodrigues.
To reinforce the proper disposal of waste, 2 240-liter containers and another 250 large-capacity containers, with 1.200 liters each, were installed along the beach and boardwalk of Avenida Atlântica. In addition, each of the three medical posts set up by the Municipal Health Department—located on Avenida Princesa Isabel, Praça do Lido, and Rua República do Líbano—had the support of three sanitation workers from the company.
It is important to remind Copacabana residents that regular garbage collection on Saturday night, the 2nd, was suspended in the neighborhood, and the service will exceptionally be carried out this Sunday, the 3rd, starting at 19 pm, serving both residential buildings and commercial establishments.
