The Public Order Department (Seop), with support from the Military Police, the Civil Police and the Special Task Force to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco) of the Public Prosecutor's Office, began demolishing a condominium with over 13 irregular buildings in the Parque União community, in Maré, in the North Zone, on August 8. Some of the buildings have up to six floors, but 40% of them were still in the masonry phase and completely unoccupied. They were built without any authorization from the City Hall and there was no technical person responsible for the works. City Hall engineers estimate that the construction workers would lose R$90 million.

Among the properties, two penthouses caught everyone's attention. According to engineers, the two together were valued at R$5 million. One of them had two floors, marble and porcelain tile finishes, and a large leisure area with a barbecue and a 40-liter pool. The property had a privileged view of the community, a soccer field, and an area where parties were held.

The second penthouse was a four-bedroom apartment with luxury finishes, a jacuzzi and walk-in closet, stairs with automatic LED lights, as well as a swimming pool with a waterfall and a barbecue. On the ground floor of the unit, the agents found a room with dozens of boxes of wine and champagne.

According to investigations by the Civil Police, the irregular constructions are the result of money laundering from local drug trafficking. In early July, Seop agents were on site and notified all the structures.
