Actions demonstrated the importance of post-rain care to prevent breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes - Edu Kapps / SMS The Rio Municipal Health Department (SMS) held a day dedicated to combating dengue fever this Saturday morning (November 8th) in all regions of the city. The actions highlighted the importance of taking precautions after rainfall to prevent water accumulation and the emergence of Aedes aegypti breeding sites. In addition to health promotion activities and guidance, inspections were carried out in properties and on the streets.
Professionals mobilized in health units and open areas in neighborhoods to provide guidance on arboviruses and check for potential mosquito breeding sites, in addition to other actions aimed at promoting general health, such as vaccination and smoking cessation awareness. With the rain that fell in the early morning, the agents' efforts were redoubled to eliminate standing water in the inspected areas.
– Health teams took to the streets this Saturday to guide the population, both for the "D-Day" action and to assist residents who had problems due to the rains. The recommendation is for everyone to check their homes to prevent the proliferation of Aedes aegypti. This period of rain and heat favors the reproduction of the mosquito, so it is important to redouble attention and for everyone to collaborate in efforts to avoid breeding grounds. Just set aside 10 minutes a week to check and eliminate possible breeding sites in your homes – says the municipal Secretary of Health, Daniel Soranz.
“Don’t give dengue, Zika, and chikungunya a chance” was the theme of this year’s Ministry of Health campaign for the National Vaccination Day. Nationwide mobilization is essential to disseminate information and prevent dengue cases. With the approach of summer, rainfall increases and the weather gets warmer, factors that are related to mosquito breeding.
Using interactive technology, throughout the year, the Health Surveillance Superintendency closely monitors the epidemiological situation in the city of Rio. In 2025, up to November 1st, environmental health surveillance agents made 10.291.786 visits to properties for the prevention and control of Aedes aegypti, and 1.424.953 containers that could serve as breeding grounds were treated or eliminated. When necessary, the public can request inspections or report potential mosquito breeding sites through the City Hall's Citizen Service Center (1746), by phone or website.
