Love, partnership, and care go hand in hand when it comes to health. Jocineia Soares, 60, found in her husband, Fernando Vieira, 53, the encouragement she needed to quit smoking. After 30 years of smoking, the Gamboa resident has been smoke-free for a year and three months. She had the support of the Tobacco Control Program of the Municipal Health Department (SMS) and, of course, of Fernando, whose company was fundamental throughout the journey.

Jocineia is a user of the Nélio de Oliveira Family Clinic (CF) in Gamboa, where she carried out the activities proposed by the program with commitment and perseverance. It was in this context that Fernando's support became essential. A non-smoker, Fernando participated in all activities, such as discussion groups, consultations, and auriculotherapy sessions, to encourage Jocineia to remain committed to the treatment.

During the first few months, which are the most difficult, Jocineia received support from her husband to overcome moments of heightened anxiety and stress.

"He strengthened me so much during the treatment. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have even made it halfway. He encouraged me a lot," she says, married to Fernando for 18 years.

"I always tried to be the best partner, someone who listens and supports. I talked to her a lot and listened to her venting during difficult times. I tried to be understanding. I think having a partner by your side during those moments is very important," he says.

Today, Jocineia serves as an example for the smoking cessation group at CF Nélio de Oliveira and celebrates the victories she has achieved thanks to treatment — and love.

"Before, the simple act of climbing stairs was difficult for me. Today I can do many things that I couldn't do before, my quality of life has greatly improved," she says.

Tobacco Control Program

The Municipal Health Department offers free treatment for those who wish to quit smoking through the Tobacco Control Program. The service is available at all 241 Primary Care units (family clinics and municipal health centers) and includes auriculotherapy, reflexology, physical activities, psychological support, dental care, and discussion groups where patients can share stories and inspiration. The services, offered in groups or individually, aim to support patients and follow a specialized treatment plan for each case.
