The Municipal Health Department (SMS) is promoting, between Thursday (27) and Saturday (29), a series of actions in health units in various regions of the city in allusion to the National Day to Combat Smoking, celebrated on August 29. The program includes conversation circles, themed waiting rooms, auriculotherapy sessions and physical activities, in addition to the dissemination of the Tobacco Control Program (PCT), a strategy of the municipal health network aimed at those who wish to quit smoking. The initiatives seek to expand the population's access to information and services aimed at promoting health, with an emphasis on prevention and care related to smoking.

Today, the Gentileza Terminal in São Cristóvão will host an event from 8 am to 13 pm with a multidisciplinary team to raise awareness about the risks of smoking, encourage physical activity and healthy habits, provide vaccinations, offer guidance on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and provide auriculotherapy. There will also be a smoking cessation workshop at Praça Nobel in Grajaú, promoted by Academia Carioca and the eMulti team (multidisciplinary team from Primary Care) in the region. In Tijuca, the Hélio Pellegrino Municipal Health Center will hold a special edition of the "Decompression" Samba Circle with a smoking cessation theme.

Activities will also be carried out in units in Madureira, Marechal Hermes, Campinho, Freguesia, Vargem Grande, Tanque, Cosmos, Campo Grande, Santíssimo, Vista Alegre, Deodoro, Itanhangá, Santa Cruz and Vila Kosmos. The program continues on Friday (28) and Saturday (29), with guidance on the risks of tobacco and the benefits of quitting smoking, distribution of informational material and registration for the PCT groups.

Health units offer treatment to stop smoking

Smoking remains one of the leading causes of preventable death in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 8 million people die each year as a result of tobacco use. To address this problem, the Municipal Health Department offers a Tobacco Control Program in its 241 Primary Care units (municipal health centers and family clinics).

Designed for those who wish to quit smoking, whether conventional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, or other devices, the program offers comprehensive assistance with a variety of therapeutic strategies. These include specialized consultations, support groups, dental treatment, and medication when necessary. The approach is personalized, focusing on the needs of each patient and providing support to cope with nicotine withdrawal.
