- Bairro Maravilha advances: two works completed and two more started in the West Zone
Infrastructure works at Sítio do Coronel, in Sepetiba, were inaugurated in April - Marcelo Piu/City of Rio Tiradentes Day (April 21) was a busy day for Rio's acting mayor, Luiz Antonio Guaraná, who was in the West Zone to deliver works and start new work fronts in the Maravilha neighborhood. The inaugurations took place in the neighborhoods of Sepetiba and Guaratiba, while the beginning of the works took place in two regions of Paciência.
– Today, April 21, Tiradentes Day, is a Sunday, a holiday, but the city government is still working. I visited the city’s West Zone, and we launched two projects, Morada dos Pitocos and Manguariba III. We are going to start the Maravilha Neighborhood in these two locations, with urbanization of streets, drainage and sewage piping. We also inaugurated two other projects in the Maravilha Neighborhood, in Sítio do Coronel and in Guaratibinha – said the acting mayor.
The works for the Maravilha neighborhood were delivered in Sítio do Coronel, in Sepetiba, and in the Guaratibinha community, in Guaratiba. In total, 15 streets were requalified in these locations, 10 in Sítio do Coronel and five in Guaratibinha. The services included the installation of storm drains for the correct drainage of rainwater, installation of drinking water and sewage networks, and paving and paving to improve the circulation of residents.
In Paciência, two areas benefited from the start of construction work in the Maravilha neighborhood. The urbanization program of the Municipal Infrastructure Department will renovate 16 streets in the Morada dos Pitocos community and another 36 in the Manguariba III Complex. The package of improvements includes installing sanitation, building sidewalks and paving the roads.
Infrastructure Secretary Jessick Trairi gave an overview of the Bairro Maravilha program and highlighted that these projects have significantly improved the quality of life of all the people who benefited from them.
– It is a program that brings infrastructure to areas without water, sewage, asphalt, and sidewalks. These are large projects, in Manguariba III there are 41 streets and in Morada dos Pitocos there are 16 streets. In these areas we see open sewage and a quality project takes time, we cannot start on all the streets at the same time – said the secretary.
The deputy mayor of the West Zone, Diogo Borba, has already started monitoring the installation of the new construction sites. He highlighted his happiness at the completion of the work at Sítio do Coronel and Guaratibinha.
– When we see changes in people’s lives, that’s the fuel we need to fight even harder. We’ve made a lot of progress in the West Zone with the Maravilha neighborhood, the BRT and several other programs – said Borba.
With Bairro Maravilha, City Hall's investments in infrastructure and urbanization exceed R$1 billion
Since 2021, the City of Rio de Janeiro has transformed 31 locations in the West Zone through the Bairro Maravilha program. The streets have been upgraded to basic sanitation, paving, and sidewalks, improving rainwater drainage and accessibility. Another 21 projects are underway in the city's most populous region. This is the case, for example, of Jardim Maravilha, in Guaratiba, which is receiving the first phase of the urbanization and infrastructure program.
The North Zone was also benefited by improvements in the Maravilha neighborhood. Eight locations are receiving actions from the program of the Municipal Infrastructure Department. One intervention has already been delivered to residents of the suburbs, in the Encantado neighborhood.
The total investment for the program is more than R$1 billion. As of February of this year, approximately 70 kilometers of urbanization had already been completed in the Maravilha neighborhood.
