Mayor congratulates students from Escola Roberto Coelho for taking first place in the municipal Ideb 2024 ranking - Marcelo Piu/City of Rio Exceeding its target and expectations, the Roberto Coelho Municipal School in Santa Cruz ranked first in the municipal ranking of the Basic Education Development Index (IDEB) 2024. The school's score rose from 3,1 in the 2007 IDEB to first place, with a score of 8,5, this year, among the city's municipal schools. The school's target was to reach a score of 7.
Mayor Eduardo Paes and Education Secretary Renan Ferreirinha visited the school to congratulate the school community. Paes congratulated the students, saying that they should thank the good teachers and other professionals at the school for the good result.
– This result shows the quality of the professionals in the department, the Regional Education Coordinators (CREs), the principal, the teachers, and the management. What we do is try to guide, inspire, and provide direction. This result shows that it is possible to do a job well done, with quality – said the mayor.
The city of Rio de Janeiro also moved up in the Southeast Region, coming in 2nd place in the Initial Years and 1st place in the Final Years. In the National Ranking, the municipal network rose from 14th to 8th place in the Initial Years and advanced from 11th to 5th place in the Final Years. –
– This result is very special, having this school ranked first in the main index of quality of education, the Ideb. It was the first, with a score of 8,5, one of the highest in Brazil, in a region of the city where people often do not know or think that a result like this is not possible. These professionals show that it is possible, with good school management, to do this incredible work, ensuring that each student has the opportunity to learn. And that students can believe in themselves. This result shows that it is possible for a public school to be of quality. This school is an inspiration to all of us – said the Secretary of Education, Renan Ferreirinha.
The principal of the Roberto Coelho Municipal School, Rafael Amaral, credited the improvement in the ranking to the integration between teachers, staff, community and students. The school, which has 325 students from the 1st to 5th grade (Initial Years), is finding its way back to good education.
– With the interaction of the entire school community, with a purpose, we were able to move forward. And we went further. Our goal was to reach a grade of 7, but we surpassed ourselves and reached 8,5. This is very important in a socially deprived community like ours – said principal Rafael Amaral.
Aline Carvalho, a teacher at Roberto Coelho for six years, said that the “secret to success” is working together, year after year.
– Since the first year, we have been preparing students, identifying difficulties, preparing for tests, and doing mock exams. I always tell them: those who read a lot, speak well, write well and will have a better understanding of other subjects – highlighted Aline, remembering that the students improved in Portuguese and Math classes.
The city of Rio achieved the highest growth in its Ideb score in the country
The Rio municipal network achieved the highest percentage increase in the score (+12%) in the assessment that makes up the Ideb (Basic Education Development Index) among all the capitals in Brazil in the Initial Years, which are students from 1st to 5th grade. The progress in the Initial Years occurs precisely in the most important period, which is literacy.
In the final years, it was the fifth largest jump in the grade (+5%) among all capitals. The municipal network of Rio is responsible for elementary education from 1st to 9th grade. (Graphs at the end of the release).
The municipal network had the highest result in the historical series of Ideb. The data was released by the Ministry of Education this Wednesday and shows that the municipal network of Rio has never achieved such high scores. In the Initial Years, the Ideb of the Rio network reached 6,0, the highest result in the historical series, which began in 2005. In the Final Years, Rio reached 5,2, another unprecedented result. This is a milestone in Rio's results.
The evolution of the quality of education in Rio de Janeiro's network appears in the assessment data from Inep (National Institute of Studies and Educational Research Anísio Teixeira), from the Ministry of Education, referring to 2023. The data show that Rio achieved historic leaps and also surpassed pre-pandemic indicators, which profoundly affected educational results throughout the country.
One of the highlights of the Ideb was the improvement in results between consecutive assessments. The growth between 2021 and 2023, in the Initial Years, is the largest increase recorded between assessments since 2009. In both the Initial and Final Years, Rio de Janeiro achieved the best scores in the entire historical series.
