The Rio de Janeiro City Hall announced this Tuesday (September 8th) the expansion of the Municipal Force's operations to a new perimeter in the city's West Zone: Santa Cruz. The expansion was announced by Rio's mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, and the Secretary of Urban Security, Brenno Carnevale, during another CompStat Rio meeting. The new perimeter, which includes the neighborhood's train station, the popular shopping center, and the Santa Cruz Shopping mall, will have preventive and visible policing by agents starting Sunday (September 13th).

— The Municipal Force is working to combat robberies and thefts where they occur most frequently. With a focus on the areas surrounding stations and commercial zones, we have reduced these rates by almost 70% in some areas of operation, and now we are moving into Santa Cruz. We will be present on the pedestrian walkway and in the areas with the highest traffic to ensure security in a strategic way — stated Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

The expansion is part of the Municipal Force's operational planning, which has been progressively incorporating new areas of operation since the start of operations in March. With the inclusion of the new perimeter, the force now covers 14 strategic areas in the municipality, defined based on the analysis of crime hotspots and statistical data.

Currently, the areas of operation are: Jardim de Alah; Rio Bus Station, Gentileza Terminal and Leopoldina Station; Avenida Presidente Vargas, Campo de Santana, Central do Brasil and Cinelândia; Campo Grande, between the Train Station and the Pedestrian Mall; São Francisco Xavier and Afonso Pena; Rua Lauro Müller, Rua General Severiano and Avenida Venceslau Brás; Botafogo Metro, Rua São Clemente and Rua Voluntários da Pátria; Botafogo Beach and Rua Marquês de Abrantes; Bangu, between the Pedestrian Mall and Bangu Shopping; Méier Station and Cachambi; Jardim Oceânico Terminal and Praça do Ó; Avenida Ayrton Senna and Avenida das Américas; and Freguesia and Jacarepaguá.

During the CompStat meeting, the Secretary of Urban Security, Brenno Carnevale, presented the operational report of the Municipal Force, highlighting the main results recorded since the beginning of its activities. During this period, agents conducted over 13 stops, resulting in 1.215 arrests and detentions. The actions also led to the recovery and seizure of 300 cell phones and 237 motorcycles, as well as the seizure of a pistol, 21 replica firearms, and 70 bladed weapons, and the execution of 31 arrest warrants.

"We must remember that these impressive results from our report—with the recovery of stolen cell phones, arrests, and the seizure of replicas and firearms—reinforce the importance of this integrated preventive work with the police. And now we will move forward and ensure greater security for those who work and study in the commercial center of Santa Cruz, those who pass through the train station, and those in the vicinity of the shopping mall in the region," highlighted the Secretary of Urban Security, Brenno Carnevale.
