Municipal Guard trains new agents to work in the Maria da Penha Patrol.

The Rio de Janeiro Municipal Guard (GM-Rio) held a graduation ceremony on Friday (August 7th) for new agents to work in the Maria da Penha Patrol. The class, consisting of 41 students, included members of GM-Rio and the Municipal Guards of Belford Roxo and Três Rios, from the Baixada Fluminense region and the interior of the state. The graduation ceremony took place at the institution's headquarters in São Cristóvão and was attended by the commander of GM-Rio, Inspector General Itaharassi Bomfim Junior; the director of the Municipal Security Force, the elite division of GM-Rio, Aimeé La Torre; the commander of the Maria da Penha Patrol, leader Glória Maria Bastos; and the commander of the Belford Roxo Municipal Guard, Roberto Costa.

The graduation ceremony took place on a symbolic date. Today, the Maria da Penha Law celebrates its 20th anniversary. This law is the main legislative milestone in Brazil for combating domestic violence, regulating the actions of security forces and outlining guidelines for the training of agents. The course promoted by GM-Rio meets the requirements of the law and has also followed, since 2025, a basic training curriculum developed jointly by various bodies that make up the network for the protection of women at all levels of government in the State of Rio de Janeiro, such as the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Court of Justice, Municipal Guards, and the Special Police Stations for Women (DEAMs).

The training, spanning three weeks, covered subjects and lectures on topics such as Nonviolent Communication and Active Listening; Chain of Custody and Crime Scene Preservation; Historical Achievements in Women's Rights: International and National Protection Instruments; Approaching Women Victims of Violence and the Coordination of SAMU (Mobile Emergency Care Service) with the Care Network; Maria da Penha Law: Advances, Protective Measures, and Accountability of the Aggressor; among others.

– This course was very important to me. I had the opportunity to overcome my shyness and silence, and I was also taken back to my childhood and realized that I experienced this at home. My father, who should have been my hero, the protector of our family, beat my mother. At that time, there was no Maria da Penha Patrol to protect my mother, me, and my sister, but today there is, and I am very happy to be a part of it – highlighted GM Daniele dos Santos Silva. She was one of the class speakers.

Also during the event, the actions of the Maria da Penha Patrol of the Rio Municipal Guard were highlighted. Currently, the special group has 79 municipal guards who work to monitor compliance with protective measures issued by the courts to prevent the revictimization of women who have already suffered some type of violence. And in six years of operation, they have assisted more than 20 women and carried out more than 94 support actions. Fortunately, to date, none of the women monitored and assisted by the Rio Municipal Guard have been victims of femicide.

The achievement was highlighted by the commander of the Rio Municipal Guard in his speech to the graduating officers. In addition to congratulating the newly graduated officers, the commander emphasized the work carried out by the Military Police Network.

 

– We, from the Rio Municipal Guard, are proud to be part of this network protecting women in our city and also to share this knowledge with other Guards, such as those from Belford Roxo and Três Rios, who also participated in our course. We have been carrying out serious, meticulous work, and I must also highlight the performance of leader Glória, commander of our Maria da Penha Patrol. The excellence of our work reverberates from this woman to her troops. Every woman should feel, and truly should be, safe and protected, and we are on the right track to fulfill this mission – concluded the commander.
