Ronda Maria da Penha municipal guards arrest man who kept ex-wife in private prison

Maria da Penha Patrol guards register at the 34th DP (Bangu) the arrest of a man who held his ex-wife in private prison - Rio City Hall

A team from the Maria da Penha Patrol of the Municipal Guard (GM-Rio) arrested a man on Tuesday night (30/4) for having held his ex-wife in private prison in the Guadalupe neighborhood, in the North Zone of Rio. The victim has already been assisted by the Maria da Penha Patrol and the request for help was made by her mother.

The victim's mother called the GM-Rio team and reported that her ex-husband went to her workplace and forced her to go with him to his house, where he kept her in solitary confinement. When the suspect was distracted, she managed to contact her mother and ask for help. The guards went to the location and, with the support of military police officers, rescued the woman, since it was a risk area. The victim and suspect were then taken to the 34th DP (Bangu), where the case was registered.

In three years, more than 60 arrests by Ronda Maria da Penha

In its three years of operation, since March 2021, the Maria da Penha Patrol has already recorded 67 arrests, the majority of which were for failure to comply with protective measures. During this period, more than 33 actions to support victims of various types of domestic violence were also recorded, and 4.743 women have already been assisted by GM-Rio teams.

The municipal guards of the Maria da Penha Patrol monitor compliance with protective measures granted by the Domestic and Family Violence Courts against Women in the capital. The patrol officers provide services with three officers, always having at least one female guard on the team. Direct contact with the women being assisted aims to keep them safe, preventing aggressors from approaching, to prevent possible revictimization.
