The Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital is calling for volunteers to donate blood on Friday, July 17th, in the Emergency Room lobby, from 9 am to 15 pm. This initiative is a result of a partnership with Hemorio, the state-run unit responsible for supplying blood components to over 200 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. The main objective is to replenish the blood bank, ensuring the availability of all procedures requiring blood, such as emergency care and surgeries.
The act of donating blood is safe and supervised by specialized professionals. Before collection, potential donors undergo screening to ensure the safety of everyone involved. After donation, the collected blood bag is processed and the blood components are separated, potentially saving up to four lives.
The next donation can be made after eight weeks for men and twelve weeks for women, the time needed for complete replenishment of the blood components removed during the previous donation.
To be a blood donor, you must present an official photo ID; be between 16 and 69 years old (those under 18 must have parental/guardian authorization); be in good health and well-rested; and weigh more than 50 kilograms. Fasting is not required, but it is recommended that donors have not consumed fatty foods in the last four hours.
People who have had tattoos or piercings must wait six months before donating. For those with piercings in mucous membrane areas, donation can only be made one year after the removal of the piercing. Those who have recently had COVID-19 need to wait 10 days after recovery. Thirty days after donation, the volunteer can pick up the results of laboratory tests performed with a small blood sample taken at the time of collection.
