The Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital in Leblon is holding a blood donation campaign this Friday, May 9. Volunteers can show up from 9 am to 15 pm in the hospital's Emergency Room. This is a partnership between the hospital and Hemorio, which is responsible for providing blood products to more than 200 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, mainly for emergencies.
To be a blood donor, you must present an official photo ID; be between 16 and 69 years old (those under 18 must have authorization from a guardian); be in good health; and weigh at least 50 kg. You do not need to fast, but it is recommended that you have not eaten fatty foods in the last three hours before donating. Another important factor is to be well-rested. After 30 days, the volunteer can get the results of laboratory tests.
People who have had tattoos or piercings must wait one year to donate. Those who have recently had COVID-19 must wait 10 days after recovering.
Donating blood is safe and saves lives. After collection, the blood components are separated and four people can benefit. Within 24 hours of donation, the donor's body begins to rebuild some of the substances that were removed, so that the next collection can be done after eight weeks for men and 12 for women, since the blood will already have the reconstituted components.
