The event takes place this Friday, from 9am to 15pm, in the Emergency room hall - Edu Kapps / SMS Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital in Gávea is holding a blood donation drive this Friday (August 15th). Volunteers can visit the hospital's Emergency Room from 08 a.m. to 9 p.m. The drive is a result of the hospital's partnership with Hemorio, which provides blood products to more than 15 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, primarily for emergencies.
After collection, the blood components are separated, and up to four people can benefit from the donation. Within 24 hours of donation, the donor's body begins to replenish some of the removed substances, meaning the next collection can be done after eight weeks for men and 12 for women, as the blood will already have the reconstituted components.
Donating blood is a safe and life-saving act. To be a blood donor, you must present an official photo ID; be between 16 and 69 years old (those under 18 must have authorization from a guardian); be in good health; and weigh more than 50 kg. You do not need to be fasting. However, it is recommended that you have not eaten fatty foods in the last four hours. Another important factor is to be well-rested.
People who have tattoos or piercings must wait six months to donate. Those with piercings in mucous membranes can only donate one year after removing the piercing. Those who have recently had COVID-19 must wait 10 days after recovery. Thirty days after donating, volunteers can get the results of laboratory tests performed using a small blood sample taken at the time of collection.
