- Ronaldo Gazolla Hospital launches blood donation campaign
After collection, the blood components are separated and four people can benefit - Edu Kapps/SMS The Ronaldo Gazolla Municipal Hospital in Acari will be holding a blood donation drive on January 22nd and 23rd. Volunteers can come between 10 am and 16 pm to the hospital's auditorium, located on the second floor. This initiative is a result of a partnership between the hospital and Hemorio, responsible for supplying blood products to over 200 public hospitals in Rio de Janeiro, primarily for emergencies, and aims to replenish blood supplies during a time of year when donations traditionally decrease.
After collection, the blood components are separated, and up to four people can benefit from the voluntary act. Within 24 hours of donation, the donor's body begins to replenish some of the substances that were removed, so the next collection can be made after eight weeks for men and 12 for women, as the blood will already have its components reconstituted.
Donating blood is a safe and life-saving act. To be a blood donor, you must present an official photo ID; be between 16 and 69 years old (those under 18 must have parental authorization); be in good health; and weigh more than 50 kilograms. You don't need to be fasting. However, it is recommended that you have not eaten fatty foods in the last four hours. Another important factor is being well-rested.
People who have had tattoos or piercings must wait six months before donating. And those with piercings in mucous membrane areas can only donate one year after the piercing is removed. Those who have recently had COVID-19 need to wait 10 days after recovery. Thirty days after donating, the volunteer can pick up the results of laboratory tests performed with a small blood sample taken at the time of collection.
