The impact of tourism on the municipality's economy will reach R$ 17,2 billion in the first half of 2026.

The city of Rio de Janeiro attracts more tourists, both domestic and international, each year. The increased number of visitors has a direct impact on the city's economy: it is estimated that in the first six months of 2026, the impact reached R$ 17,2 billion, with 65,6% (R$ 11,3 billion) from domestic tourists and 34,4% (R$ 5,9 billion) from international tourists. The projection from the Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Secretariats of Economic Development (SMDE) and Tourism (SMTUR-Rio) and Riotur, shows that Rio received 6,4 million tourists in the first half of 2026, with 20,0% (1,3 million) being international and 80,0% (5,1 million) domestic.

The data on the number of domestic and international tourists comes from the Carioca Tourism Observatory, of SMTUR-Rio. The calculation of economic activity was based on the study "Tourism Panorama – Domestic and International Tourism 2025", by the Fecomércio Institute for Research and Analysis (IFec RJ). For Brazilian tourists, the average expenditure is R$ 2.212, updated to June 2026 values, deflated by the IPCA (Brazilian Consumer Price Index). For foreign tourists, the average expenditure is R$ 4.624, a value converted to dollars during the study period, and updated by the exchange rate of June 2026. It is worth noting that the Rio de Janeiro City Hall – through SMDE (Municipal Secretariat for Economic Development) – has a Technical Cooperation Agreement with IFec RJ for conducting economic studies, including on tourism.
