Intendente Magalhães is the stage for a parade of football fans

From the stands of Maracanã to Estrada Intendente Magalhães, in the North Zone of Rio. On Thursday night (21/4), Flamanguaça kicked off the parades of samba schools formed by fans of the four big teams in Rio de Janeiro. Once again with a large presence of the public, the street Carnival was marked by lots of partying and famous chants from fans in football stadiums.

 

– People from Rio love samba and soccer. They go together very well. And, importantly, they go together in peace. I am very proud to parade with Flamanguaça, a great school because of its fans and Flamengo – said Camile Macedo, 17, who is making her debut as the school’s flag bearer, but already has experience having held the position at the age of 11 with Acadêmicos do Dendê, also in a parade at Intendente Magalhães.

 

Created in July 2020, Flamanguaça made its Carnival debut, parading in the Evaluation Group with the theme “I am resistance! I am black skin! I am the voice of the favela that does not shut up! Nice to meet you, I am Flamanguaça”, by carnival designer Amarildo de Melo. The school was welcomed by the public with chants from the red-and-black fans and the club's anthem. One fan, on the playground of a nearby building, spent the entire parade waving a flag of the team.

 

– I have been a member of the Flamanguaça fan club since 2011. We are apprehensive and nervous because this is the school’s first parade. But we are sure that it will be beautiful and the support of the fans will be important to give us more confidence. It will be an unforgettable performance – said Vinicius Bauer, 38, a member of one of the school’s wings minutes before the parade began.

 

 

This Friday (22/4), two more schools representing the fans will be present at Intendente Magalhães. In the Bronze Series, the first to parade will be União Cruzmaltina, created in June 2019 and linked to Vasco. The theme is called “My heart is your home”, a tribute by carnival designer Rodrigo Almeida to the club's fans.

The second school to parade will be Guerreiros Tricolores, founded in July 2019 by Fluminense fans. To liven up Intendente Magalhães, carnival designers Pedro Machado and Raphael Homem came up with the theme “Forged in the colors of the warrior, our motto is to win or to win!”

On Friday (29/4), in the Silver Series, the football fans return to Intendente Magalhães with two more schools. Flamengo will be represented again, this time by Raça Rubro-Negra, created in September 2019. Carnival designer Jorge Knawer re-edited the theme “Aquarela Brasileira”, by Império Serrano, from 1964.

The day of parades will be closed by Botafogo Samba Clube. The Alvinegro school was created in July 2018 and will present the theme “João Saldanha: a lover of truth, walking in times of illusion”, a tribute to the late journalist, writer and football coach. Comedian Marcelo Adnet is one of the carnival artists, alongside Ricardo Hessez.

Closing the parades of the samba schools linked to football is Imperadores Rubro-Negros, in the Access Group B, on Sunday (1/5). Founded in June 2018, the Flamengo fan school will present the theme “Olele, olele, a heritage from the African continent”, by carnival artist Sandro Rauly.

In the Silver Series parades on Saturday (30/4) and Access Group C on Sunday (1/5), there will be no presentations by schools linked to football teams.

Organization

The school parades at Intendente Magalhães include fireworks, new lighting and the entire structure of the Rio City Hall, such as street cleaners from Comlurb and teams from the Health Department and the Municipal Guard. The menu at the stalls is varied, with barbecue, snacks, French fries, breaded chicken, churros, hot dogs, sun-dried meat with cassava and boiled corn.
