- Jaé: Court confirms end to cash payments mandated by City Hall.
The city government will continue advancing in the modernization of the municipal ticketing system - Marcos de Paula The modernization of the public transport payment system in the city of Rio, implemented by the Rio City Hall, was recognized today (May 26th) by the 2nd Public Treasury Court. The decision rejects the preliminary injunction request from Procon-RJ, which attempted to invalidate the replacement of cash with digital means on the city's buses.
— The decision reinforces the City Hall's choice to replace cash with digital means to bring more security, transparency, control, and efficiency to the service, in addition to contributing to the reduction of property crimes. It is, without a doubt, an advance in the city's public transportation — said the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere.
In her decision, Judge Georgia Vasconcellos considers that "the change intended by the defendant in the method of payment for tickets in no way affects the quality of the transportation service provided, making it inadequate or inefficient. Even less does it make it unsafe, which is precisely the greatest quality that the change in the payment system can provide."
On Monday (May 25th), the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, and the Municipal Secretary of Transportation, Jorge Arraes, detailed, in a press conference held at the Operations and Resilience Center (COR), the operation of the payment system for municipal buses. From May 30th, cash will no longer be accepted on municipal buses.
