Another GET (Program for Educational Transformation) is inaugurated in the city: there are now 1.560 schools in the municipal network.

The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Cavaliere, accompanied by the municipal secretary of Education, Hugo Nepomuceno, and the municipal secretary of the Civil House, Leandro Matieli, inaugurated, this Sunday (02/08), another Technological Educational Gymnasium (GET), in Inhoaíba, in the West Zone. The new GET General Miranda Filho has 24 classrooms for classes from the 1st to the 5th grade of Elementary School. With this inauguration, the number of schools in the municipal education network in the city of Rio de Janeiro rises to 1.560 — from daycare to Youth and Adult Education (EJA).

 

"We are building a public education network that is a source of pride for the people of Rio. We are talking about achieving 70% full-time education in the schools, and this will be done by bringing the methodology of the Technological Educational Gymnasium to the largest possible number of schools. And with this inauguration, we are paying a very important and beautiful tribute to a Brazilian hero, General Miranda Filho, who loved Rio de Janeiro. I am sure that this will inspire the students of this GET," said Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere.

With an investment of R$ 27,6 million, the new GET has a collaborative space, auditorium, cafeteria, library, and covered multi-sports court. All learning environments are air-conditioned. The school meets all accessibility standards and was built with thermoacoustic materials, special panels and ceilings, which guarantee comfortable temperatures and insulation from external noise.

 

"What we are building here is a new model of education. In addition to full-time schooling, students will have hands-on learning, which they build together with their peers, mediated by the teacher. GET connects our youth today with the best opportunities that the university market can offer," reinforced the municipal Secretary of Education, Hugo Nepomuceno.

 

This Monday (03/08), the more than 600 students in the municipal education system return to the classrooms for the second semester.

 

General Otávio Rodrigues de Miranda Filho

The new school honors Major General Otávio Rodrigues de Miranda Filho, who built a respectable career in the Brazilian Army and held command positions in Brazil and abroad.

 

Miranda Filho was a military attaché at the Brazilian Embassy in China and head of International Affairs in the Armed Forces. He also headed the cabinet of the Planalto Military Command and led the 8th Military Region in Northern Brazil. Born in Teresina (PI) in 1964, he graduated from the Agulhas Negras Military Academy in 1988. He died in May 2026, at the age of 62, covered in military honors and merits.

 

General Otávio Miranda Filho's wife, Adriana Costa Miranda, participated in the inauguration and spoke about the tribute.

 

"I am very grateful for this opportunity that has been given to us, for the family to also be involved with this school. I strongly believe in education and I am very happy to know that Otávio is being honored with this gift," said Adriana.

 

At the inauguration, which was attended by military personnel, the new GET received a UN flag, presented by Damián Cardona Onsés, acting director of the United Nations Information Centre for Brazil. The flag will remain at the unit as a tribute to the general's career, who commanded United Nations (UN) missions in Congo and Sudan.

 

GETs are an innovative teaching model.

The Technological Educational Gymnasiums (GETs) are an innovative teaching model that integrates different areas of knowledge, focusing on critical thinking, creativity, sensitivity, and student leadership, through active methodologies and a comprehensive education proposal that extends beyond traditional classroom spaces.

The initiative was recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC) as one of the most inspiring experiences in the country in the management and pedagogical projects of comprehensive education. This recognition reinforces Rio's position as the Innovation Capital and consolidates the presence of digital and media education in the municipal public school system.

GETs adopt the STEAM approach — Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics — and represent a new conception of school for the 21st century: spaces focused on didactic-pedagogical innovation, experimentation with knowledge, and active collaboration between students and educators. The proposal prepares students for the challenges of the future by bringing technology and practical learning closer to the daily lives of families and communities.

Each unit boasts modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment. In the collaborative environment, students work with artificial intelligence, 3D printers, laser cutters, projection glasses, robotics kits, and sewing machines—tools that make learning concrete and connected to the reality of the territories where the schools are located.
