- Martinho da Vila is measured for the construction of a monument in his honor
The prototype of the sculpture: Martinho da Vila on top of a large crown, over 14 meters high In an important step toward the construction of the sculpture honoring the samba artist Martinho da Vila, the Municipal Department of Conservation and Public Services took official measurements of the samba artist at his apartment in Barra da Tijuca last Monday (September 01st). The project, which will celebrate one of Brazil's greatest cultural icons, enters a new phase.
The project was conceived by carnival designer Paulo Barros, inspired by the song "Canta, canta, minha gente," released in 1974 and one of the artist's classics. The sculpture will be made by artist Mario Pitanguy.
, a direct reference to the legacy of the Unidos de Vila Isabel samba school. The monument will be located in Barão de Drummond Square. There will be two parallel work fronts, one focused on the sculpture and the other on the crown's structure, with the tribute scheduled for completion in early 2026.
Conservation Secretary Diego Vaz highlighted the project's historical significance:
"Immortalizing one of the greatest figures in our history in a single act is challenging. The best way to portray Martinho's legacy in this monument was to represent joy. The opportunity to show that, even in adversity, life will improve," said Secretary Diego Vaz.
It will be the first large-scale monument in the city honoring a personality since the one in Zumbi dos Palmares, in the Center, in 1986. Dressed in white and exuding charisma, Martinho da Vila celebrated the moment:
"Friends! I'm happy for Vila Isabel. The perfect mayor, Eduardo Paes, will erect a monument in Vila Isabel, with a huge statue of me that will become a tourist attraction. Long live Noel's neighborhood!" celebrated Martinho da Vila.

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall, through the Conservation Department, scheduled the bidding process for September 19th to select the company responsible for erecting the sculpture's structure and revitalizing Barão de Drummond Square.
