The Municipal Guard's Video Patrol Unit has already recorded more than 23 thousand actions against disorders on the edge of the South Zone

The Rio City Hall, through the Municipal Guard, recorded 23.210 actions against disorder on the coast of the South Zone, in three years and seven months of operation of the Video Patrol Unit, which operates in the Operations Center (COR). The agents who work on the streets have the continuous support of the team that monitors around 80 cameras redirected to reproduce images of the boardwalk and the sand strip, with a focus on the safety of pedestrians, beachgoers and tourists.

From January 2017 to August 2020, the Video Patrol Unit has already monitored 8.660 people acting suspiciously on the coast of the South Zone, resulting in the approach of 191 suspects and the arrest of 22 people after flagrant crimes of robbery or theft recorded by the cameras.

In addition to focusing on public safety, the service is also used in urban control actions and in the monitoring of municipal regulations. In total, 11.938 ordering actions have been carried out since 2017, and during this period, agents seized 6.605 items that were being sold by unauthorized street vendors, in addition to removing 1.478 dogs from the sand, dismantling 442 camping tents and preventing 1.579 sports practices in places or at times that were not permitted.

– The work carried out by our guards focuses on crime prevention and these figures show that the action has been quite effective. Our main objective is to prevent crimes from happening, so the speed with which information from the unit reaches the guard on duty is essential for the success of the action. With this, we hope to contribute even more to maintaining order on the beaches of our city – stated the commander of the Municipal Guard, inspector general José Ricardo Soares.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has changed the work routine of municipal guards working in the Video Patrol Unit. Work shifts have been changed, the spacing between officers working to monitor cameras has been increased, and face masks have been made mandatory and hand sanitizer has been made available. As part of the measures adopted by the City of Rio to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the cameras have started to assist the work carried out by the Disk Aglomeração of the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order (Seop), generating 1.623 health inspection actions on the coast.

– We have made some adjustments to our work here at the Operational Control Center and the cameras have become great allies in combating crowds on the coast. When we detect any movement that requires health inspection, we call the nearest unit to act on the spot. These measures are necessary to contain the spread of the disease in places that already regularly receive large concentrations of people, such as beaches – said the director of the Operational Control Center of the Municipal Guard, inspector Ricardo Dias da Silva.

The Video Patrol Unit was implemented in January 2017 as part of the Prevention Plan against Petty Crimes and Robberies on the Beaches developed by the Municipal Department of Public Order (SEOP). With access to 811 cameras owned by the City Hall, municipal guards carry out daily monitoring of the beaches of Leblon, Ipanema, Arpoador, Copacabana and Leme. Crime records are also provided to the Civil Police, to assist in registering occurrences at police stations.
