Operation of the Morro da Providência Cable Car will resume in the city's Port Region

The Providência Cable Car - Disclosure/City of Rio The restoration of the Providência Cable Car, in the city's Port Region, began this week, in a first step towards the service being offered free of charge to the community's five thousand residents. The resumption will occur in two phases, and the first is already underway: the Companhia Carioca de Parcerias e Investimentos (CCPar) has contracted the Austrian company Doppelmayr, the equipment's manufacturer, to repair and replace the electrical and automation parts.
The second stage will involve civil engineering works. CCPar published a notice on Wednesday (27/7) to hire the company responsible for these interventions. Repairs will be made to the metal towers and all components of the three stations, such as roofs, elevators and accesses.
The operating contract for the Providência Cable Car ended and was not renewed in January 2017, leaving the equipment idle. At the end of last year, Rio City Hall began studies to map out the interventions needed to recover and resume the mode of transport.
Opened in July 2014, the Providência Cable Car connects Praça Américo Brum, at the top of the hill, to Central do Brasil and Gamboa. The equipment has the capacity to transport 16 people per hour in each direction, in its XNUMX gondolas. The project was made possible by the Morar Carioca Program, which aims to urbanize favelas, to benefit the residents of one of the steepest hills in the city. The Gamboa station houses a family clinic and a Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS). A skate park will be opened in front of the Américo Brum station in a space provided by the City Hall.
